Tsunami in the Fjords?…….

Not sure if anyone saw the TV programme this week that mentioned there is a hillside in the fjord that is falling away and may cause a tsunami up the fjord and take out some towns and lower houses.  I didn’t see the programme myself  but was told about it, I was quite interested in this so have done a little research.
The Geirangerfjord is under constant threat from the mountain Akerneset which is about to erode into the Fjord.  A collapse would produce a tsunami, hitting several nearby towns including Geiranger and Hellesylt. The threat is analysed by a multidisciplinary approach spanning from rock-slope stability via rockslide and wave mechanics to hazard zoning and risk assessment.
I have cruised the Norwegian fjords many times and I have to say one of my favorite places was Hellesylt and Geiranger.   Geiranger is a small tourist village in the western part of Norway, and has the most spectacular scenery.  In 2005 the Geirangerfjord area was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If you have never been to the Fjords now is the best time to go, there are plenty of good deals at the moment with many of the cruise lines.
