My mini guide to cruising

The great thing about cruising is that it really does cater for a wide range of requirements, from looking for a once in a lifetime cruise, adventure, ultra- luxury or a family packed all fun cruise there is something for everyone.  With so many different types of cruises it must get confusing to know which cruise line is for you.  So below is a mini-guide that might help you to look at what’s best for you.

FAMILY

With state of the art ships offering everything from ice-skating rinks to onboard water parks, many cruise lines offer incredible family-orientated facilities to entertain children of all ages.  If you are looking for relaxation, fun and enjoyment then you need to look at the following –

Royal Caribbean, P&O, Celebrity Cruises, MSC, Norwegian Cruise Line , Princess Cruises and Thomsons

RIVER

Becoming increasingly popular, offering a different pace with a more relaxed atmosphere.  These ships are much smaller usually accommodating no more than 200 guests. There are lots of different companies ranging from 3 * up to 5*.  Below are a list of different companies to consider.  I would be able to narrow this down once I know more specific requirements –

AMAWaterways, Avalon Waterways, CroisEurope, Emerald Waterways, Scenic Tours, Shearings, Tauck, The River Cruise Line, Uniworld, Viking

ADVENTURE

If you are looking for an expedition cruise, that will always include informative talks and tour guides then you need to look at:

Hurtigruten, Silversea Expeditions and Star Clippers

SMALL SHIPS

Smaller ships can of course squeeze into the nooks and crannies of the World that larger, mass market vessels cannot reach, bringing you a more intimate and individual feel to your cruise.  Allowing you to explore lesser known destinations.  Look at:

Hurtigruten, Silversea, Seabourn, Seadream, Star Clippers, Voyages to Antiquity

ULTRA LUXURY

Opulent surroundings, attentive service and quality dining are hallmarks of luxury cruises on both small ships and mega-yachts,  You can expect more space with upscale suite accommodation, speciality restaurants, and ports of call more off the beaten track. Usually these ships are all-inclusive, with extra charges for drinks, gratuities and in some cases shore excursions.  Look at:

Oceania cruises, Regent Seven Seas, Seadream, Seabourn, Crystal, Silversea

WORLD

What an amazing experience to be able to sail the World, departing from various ports in Europe and USA, though Southampton is the traditional port for British world cruise passengers to sail from.  Voyages ranges from around 80 days to six months and combine ocean crossings with exotic destinations across different continents.  Look at:

Cunard, Fred Olsen, Oceania Cruises, P&O cruises, Princess, Regent, Holland America, Silversea
