Grand Princess returns
Just had a look of some photos of the newly refurbished Grand Princess and was impressed by the changes. This was Princess Cruises most extensive dry dock in history, May 6th marked the day the first passengers set sail aboard the completely transformed Grand Princess in Fort Lauderdale.
The ship was in dry dock for 24 days and has been transformed from top to bottom. It also attracted media and
video updates that attracted more than half a million views. The Grand Princess dry dock journal captured the dramatic process with 26 video updates plus more than 300 photos of the daily progress at the shipyard in the Bahamas. It shows how they removed the “Skywalkers” nightclub from the ship’s stern and the complete demolition and rebuilding of the atrium to create the new Piazza. The video was hosted by the Grand Princess Cruise Director Martyn Moss. I think this was a great idea, many people are intrigued how these refurbishments are carried out and shows how much thought and hard work is involved to get the ship ready.
It took 1,400 contractors working round the clock, 10 hours alone to cut Skywalkers from the ship and around 50 square miles of new carpet. The video also shows the different perspectives on the project with interviews of key players, the ships Captain Tony Herriott, the Chief Technical Officer Gilberto Vinci plus many more.
The biggest transformation is the completely new Piazza atrium, several new eateries – including Alfredo’s Pizzeria and the Crown Grill – and the first speciality tea lounge called Leaves. Also included were seven new window suites, casino, boutiques and art gallery, improvements to the Horizon Court, Lotus Spa and the wedding chapel, plus the addition of Crooner’s Martini Lounge, and of course the new nightclub The One5.
The ship is now half way through a 16 day British Isle Passage to its summer homeport of Southampton, from which it will sail a season of European itineraries, including Mediterranean cruise and a number of shorter “Interlude” sailings.
