Extinction of the Towel Cruise Animal!

For travelers who love to sail with Norwegian Cruise Lines, the popular towel animals found in the cabins of ships in the fleet could soon be a thing of the past.

Norwegian has eliminated towel animals on several of the ships in the cruise line’s fleet and reduced the number found on other vessels as part of an effort to become more environmentally friendly.

Towel animals have come to be much beloved by regular cruisers including us,  who enjoy returning to their cabins to see what inventive creation our cabin steward has left us.them.  Your cabin steward can conjure up an entire menagerie, from swans to crocodiles to elephants thanks to clever towel origami. Often the creatures will sport items belonging to the passengers themselves – a hat posed at a jaunty angle on a monkey or a pair of sunglasses perched on a rabbit.

Whether the towel animals are used by customers or not, they are thrown in with the dirty sheets when the cleaning crew handles each room. By washing fewer towels, the cruise NCL say they would use less water, soap, and energy.

But no more as this signature turndown service comes at a cost to the environment say NCL.

This is the latest in a series of cruise industry initiatives aimed at making cruise ships more environmentally friendly. Many lines have eliminated plastic straws and single-use plastics from their ships. Others have invested in more fuel-efficient engines, the use of solar energy and equipment to reuse water.

We should have seen this coming after the pillow-top chocolates went away about 10 years ago. Maybe next they will replace lounge chairs with rubber mats. Or no more than one pillow per person in a cabin!  The possibilities on that list are endless.

Can this just be another cost-cutting exercise disguised by good intentions?

I just hope other cruise lines do not follow suit.
