The average age of today’s cruiser

Cruising is no longer exclusive to retirees. According to research in 2014 the average age of cruisers has decreased from 60 in 2004 to 55 and I suspect that has gone down again. This may have something to do with the average cost of a cruise also decreasing from £3868 to £2798.

With cruising becoming more like a floating resort with top of the range gym’s, rejuvenating spa’s, rock climbing walls, fast food restaurants and nightclubs it’s hardly surprising that the younger holiday maker is getting on board.

Set dinning times in the same restaurant is no longer the only choice. Most if not all the cruise liners now offer anytime dining where you can dine when and with whom you wish. With a choice of multiple restaurants ranging from Indian fusion to traditional pub grub!.

Don’t want to dress up for dinner… fine, Norwegian cruise lines (NCL) offer freestyle cruising where you can wear, eat and do what you want.

Even the 6 star cruise lines are going less formal and doing smart casual anytime dining.

Bowls has gone and in its place is fitness classes, running tracks, mini golf, 10 pin bowling and multi-use sports courts. You could learn to surf on Royal Caribbeans wave riders,  Try out the largest ropes course at sea on NCL, learn something new in an informal lecture or go zooming down a flume which wraps around the side of a cruise ship!. When the sun goes down you’ll have shows which rival those on London’s west end, live music, cocktails made by robots,  nightclubs open till the early hours or  you can chill and watch the latest movies under stars.

You no longer need loads of time or a big budget to experience cruising, as well as 2 night taster cruises from £199 you can also do 7 nights on the Emerald Princess for just £599pp, this is based on the Southampton to Southampton cruise on the 28th May 2016.
