We’ve been hearing today that poor Rhapsody of the Seas got pretty battered last night in the Med.
The Royal Caribbean ship was damaged after sudden strong winds hit the ship in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The damage included broken windows, some of which were in the Viking Crown Lounge. The below video taken by a passenger shows some of the damage caused.
The following statement was issued:
”Early this morning, while sailing near Greece, Rhapsody of the Seas encountered sudden strong winds for a brief period of time. The ship sustained some minor damage to public areas, but is safe and fully operational. Weather conditions have improved throughout the day.
Rhapsody of the Seas continues on its regularly scheduled ten-night itinerary, which includes port calls to Corfu, Greece; Santorini, Greece; Athens (Piraeus), Greece; Mykonos, Greece Kotor, Montenegro and Zadar, Croatia. The ship will arrive in Santorini, Greece, Tuesday morning, as scheduled.”
Passengers have been posted on the cruise forums saying that windows along the open deck were also smashed. The Captain made announcements during the storm informing passengers that ‘everything was under control’.
The ship is currently on an 11 night Greece and Adriatic sailing and scheduled to arrive back in Venice, Italy on 26th September.
So far, no injuries have been reported.
Earlier in September, Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas also got caught in a storm although suffered much more damage in a previous storm she was caught in in 2015.
Have you ever been caught in a storm on a ship? Do you have pictures or videos? The best I can do was the small storm when myself and my colleague were on MSC Divina in the Caribbean on a Miami round-trip cruise. You can find the video about half way down this page.
