Everyone has an opinion on MSC and working in this industry, we get to hear them all. They’re like Marmite. People either love them or hate them. It seems recently though that the scales have been tipped and more people are starting to hate them and MSC’s standards are putting people off cruising altogether!!
This comes after an email I received from a lovely customer of mine. The people in question have cruised many times before with the likes of Cunard, RCI and P&O. I know they’ll never cruise with MSC again after this. Here’s the email:
Hi Louise.
Just returned off the MSC Opera…………….WHAT A NIGHTMARE.
I would never travel with MSC again – if you don’t mind, as it will make me feel better – i’m going to quickly share our experience.
Remembering we arent experienced travellers as a lot of others are, but we have done nearly 10 cruises with carriers such as Cunard, P&O, RCI, C&M, and now MSC.
We have always had a fantastic time on every single cruise, realising all companies are different and go with what they offer, but this was unbelievable.
Here is what MSC REALLY do have to offer passengers:
1. We were given a check in time of 11.00am. Traffic was bad, which is expected due to new roads being constructed, but we still go there at 11.20.
We were told to queue outside a tent, which we did for 20 minutes, finally getting in at 12.00 and handed a ticket number 17 and told to sit down……nowhere to sit as the tent was brimming full and everyone complaining as it was so hot in there.
We were finally called at 2.50pm to check in and board……..3 hours in a tent that was hot and nowhere to sit….just to bard!
We were told they didnt even start check-in until 11.30?
2. On boarding the ship, we had to queue for the obligatory boarding photograph, all other entrances were roped off……20 minutes wait for the photo – we jumped the ropes – that was just cattle traetment. We got told off but then everyone followed us…..the boarding structure was disgusting.
3. Once through o the bar, having paid for our drinks package we thought we would make the most of it and get a well deserved drink to calm the stress…………..NO CHANCE.
Im not exagerating when i say there was one guy behind the bar in a lounge that holds about 300+ and one poor girl walking round taking orders who just snapped that she was busy and we had to wait.
The queues in every single bar, and im not exagerating when i say were an hour………….
We tried every single bar and they were all the same……i asked if this was normal and one staff manager snapped “what do you expect when you all want everything at the same time”
There was a distinct lack of staff………..2 people in each room serving………………thats 10 staff in 5 massive rooms………….unbelievable.
4. Ive done sone safety checks now and this was apalling. Our section were all crammed into the casino like sardines. We were kept crammed in for 25 minutes and then The guy announced that we had to hold our lifejackets above our head (Impossible to do as we were that crammed our arms couldnt move) told to do up belt……and then that was the safety procedure over??????
What was the point in that – people were fuming!
5. Then as we left the safety drill – we went to the resteraunts for food – AND THEY SHUT IT !
Leaving just pizza to eat……………..everyone was really angry !
6. The entertainment on both evenings were embarrasing – you would give them a spot at Butlins let alone a cruise.
A duo in one room that was empty – we wondered why – she was so out of tune everyone was just sat in amazement how bad she was – and then left.
A violinist in another room that was aptly named the doctors waiting room – it was that bad.
And the evening entertainment was shocking…………..the ships dancers and both nights the highlight was a woman hanging herself from bedsheets suspended from a hook on the ceiling !
7. The evening food was shocking – the worst ive ever had – i’ve never been to prison but i bet those dinners are better – everyone was complaining – it was the worst food ive ever had on a ship!
As we were on the late sitting – i was that hungr AFTER our sitting – we went upstairs at 10.00pm to get something from the self service – IT HAD SHUT!
Ok it had “make your own sandwiches” but that was it – not even cakes or cookies.
8. Over to get a cup of tea and just retire to bed as we’d had enough – NOPE! No cups – they were all in th washer “according to staff” and we had to wait. There was a queue at 10.00 pm of about 15 people, the guy at the front said he’d been waiting for 20 minutes for cups !
Cups came – Guess what “No Tea bags only Earl Grey” Because……………and this was his words………….”everyone wants english tea”………………well yeah – you are leaving an english port with english passengers????
And this is the best ——————- I ordered Sharon a Birthday cake………….they said online it would be bought to the table on the first sitting……………..
I waited for meal to be served and then when desserts were due……………waiting for the cake to arrive as a surprise…………….the waiter walked up to Sharon and said………”Are you Sharon Leaver?” Embarrased and confused she said yes why…..he then siad………….ok wait there as ive got to go and get a cake for you!!!!! Some surprise that was!
But to be fair they bought it out and sang happy birthday – but why tell her first,,,,,,,Durrrrrr.
And finally – we got to bed and started reading the sheet of instructions about disembarkment………………i read that we were floor 9, so due to dis-embark at 9.00 am.
At 6.25am we had the cabin man banging the door down saying “you should all be out your room now – you should read the paperwork”.
Ok i didnt read the 6.30 GET OUT bit and like many many others didnt think that we had to get out that early – never has that happened before????
So down for breakfast……………..again they had one tin of sausages, bacon, eggs, hash browns, being served in 2 areas……………..so thats 2 tins of each for the whole ship……………a joke!
When we finally got it – it wasnt cooked properly and my god was i bad this morning.
And one last thing – they has a RANDOM hand sanitizer placed at strategic places that you really did have to hunt for – and guess what – THEY WERE ALL EMPTY – we only found one that worked and that was on an exit FROM the resteraunt……………
Absolutely shocking…………………We would never travel with MSC again, and i think if you booked others onto this particular cruise………….you may be getting some worse complaints than ive given.
Ive attached a photo of the people queueing to complain…………..i honestly thought there was going to be a very angry confrontation at one time, someone even made a comment about the Titanic which was totally out of order, but describes the anger passengers felt – and all cheered as we were disembarking as the captain announced – you are all now free to dis-embark!!!
I know it wasnt the most expensive cruise but it still cost me about £700-00 with everything in – and it really was a total waste of money………………so dissapointed.
And whats unbelievable is this is supposed to be a taster cruise for people to book longer cruises with MSC – i just thank my lucky stars that i tried the taster first – i’d never cruise with these again.
Total shambles from start to finish.
Just look at the faces on these passengers on attached photo – all at reception waiting to complain.
I felt so sorry for thos who were taking this as a “first cruise experience”. We must have spoke to at least 6 couples that said it was their first cruise………….we tried to explain to every single couple we spoke to – that this wasnt normal for other companies – but they werent gonna be convinced – they all said they’d never cruise again……and thats such a shame.
So dissapointed 🙁
So what’s happened MSC? What’s gone wrong? This is completely unacceptable. I’m sure it never used to be this bad but I for one, am seeing an increase in the number of complaints about MSC – so much so that in the last week, two of my regulars have called asking about an MSC cruise and I’ve had to tell them that knowing what they’re used to, I don’t feel comfortable selling them MSC at the moment! A few weeks ago things were different. Something massive has changed recently. And it’s only getting worse.
This is completely unacceptable.
MSC are giving the cruise industry a bad name and this is unfair on the other cruise lines that go out of their way to ensure their guests have an amazing time!
I value my passengers feedback greatly but I’m at my wits end with MSC now.
I’ve forwarded my customers email onto our MSC contact and am currently awaiting a response.
What are your MSC experiences? Good or bad or just plain awful? Please, please let me know. I need as much feedback as possible.
Thanks
Lou

I don’t like trashing any cruise company but have to agree with some of the comments. We sailed on Opera in March 2013 from Cape Town to Genoa. On the whole it was a good experience. Having said that some of the bar staff were argumentative and even rude. The staff on the reception were unhelpful and the so called tour experts didn’t know what they were doing. Eg. ” What island are we visiting in Cape Verde?” Answer “Cape Verde” and when travelling to Las Palmas when asked which Canary island is this? Was informed, Las Palmas. Also when the time came to pay the on board account was told Sorry we don’t accept debit cards…eh?
I did one week cruise with MSC and I have to say the evening meals were the only highlight. The rest of the week is pretty much as described by you.
I would never go on another MSC even if they gave me it for free!
I told them that too.
Ian
I was also on this sailing with my husband, daughter and a friend of ours. Everything this lady says is absolutely true. It was my friend’s first cruise and she thought it was ok but we are used to Celebrity standards and queuing for drinks and being told they have run out of glasses was a joke. Entertainment was embarrassing. I thought it was karaoke in one of the bars but no she was the real entertainment. They disembarked people in wheelchairs in Guernsey and when the tender reached St Peter Port there was a metal gangplank with a very very steep slope. Goodness only knows how they would have got wheelchairs up that. Surely the staff knew and should have warned these people beforehand. Food was appalling. Queues for breakfast stretched out the door of the buffet. No staff on duty to make sure everyone used the hand sanitiser. Ordered cinnamon raisin toast in the restaurant on departure day. It eventually arrived but contained no cinnamon or raisins. Met an Australian couple who were devastated as they had booked 3.5 weeks on the ship and were hating every minute. Oh and the jacuzzis were completely unusable as they were full of little kids dive bombing and messing about. Not on especially as they are travelling free. Kids should not be in the hot tubs. Only saving grace was that we managed to get a priority boarding card because my daughter is on medication which needs to be taken at lunchtime with food so we were on the ship by midday. We will NEVER go with MSC again.
Agree totally with all comments. I too was on this cruise and it was the worst I have ever experienced. Someone needs to combine all these reviews and send them to the UK MD! We had pretty much the same experience in relation to bar service etc – but added to this, when we asked for gratuities to be taken off we were told they would be, but they weren’t – so we had to sort it on the last morning, then just when we were walking along the deck and thought we’d escaped, they beeped me out but told my partner he couldn’t get off because his account was not closed – even though both accounts were on my card! This was happening to quite a few other people and we saw one 77 year old guy (as his son told us) be sent back to join the huge queue in that photo above to sort it out! Even though it was their system error . . . The 6.30am thing on departure day is ridiculous – and then having to wait 3.5 hours to get off if you’re in the 10am batch. I noticed they did it by cabin number and it seemed to be a standard sheet – so that could definitely affect my cabin numer choice – if I was ever going to go with MSC again, which I’m not!
Also agree on the kids in jacuzzis situation. We did see one deck steward ineffectually asking parents to take their kids out, as they were supposed to be adults only (despite no signs) but she just said the main pool was too cold, and so he wandered off and did nothing! At least one of the two (and two is not enough!) should have been clearly marked as adults only.
On a final note, you would hope they would make some allowance/variation in script for 2 night cruises in their cabin newsletters. Imagine the scene, you wait for ages to embark in the hot, tuffy tent with not enough seats, you get on board, fight for lunch, manage to find a bar that will serve you in less than 20 mins if you’re lucky, unpack, go for dinner, get back to your cabin, pick up the following day’s newsletter (for your one full day on board) to see what activities are available and it reads ‘Your cruise is sadly coming to an end, but we hope you have lots of wonderful memories of your time on board’!!!! Enough said . . .
Just returned from our first cruise on the MSC Preziosa. Picked up the ship at Venice and queued for three and a half hours before getting on the ship. Did not get the safety drill or welcome. Absolute mayhem. The ship is wonderful sparkling brand new. Food and staff – excellent, but no organisation. The first port of call took one hour to disembark and one hour to embark and this pattern continued for the next three port calls. Eventually we reached the port which we had looked forwards to, Dubrovnik, the ship was late arriving and it took an hour to disembark and a further hour to get on a shuttle bus into the centre which was 12.50 euros each, leaving us two hours to see what we could. We then queued for another 30 minutes for a shuttle back to the ship, where we queued a further 40 minutes to get back on.
The disembarkment at Venice was no different, required to leave the cabin at 7.30 am and told to assemble in the theatre at 9.40 am and then waiting again for another two and a half hours before being able to leave the ship.
The ship is so large and with so many passengers, the company are unable to manage it properly.
There are no outside areas where you can sit in comfort without children running around, what areas there are are virtually around the pool areas. This is not a cruise liner for the mature traveller.
During the cruise it was refered as “A holiday camp on the sea” to “18-30’s”.
As a result, this was our first and our last cruise, but we wanted to warn any other people that are thinking of using this ship to stay clear. That is unless you enjoy being transported like cattle.
I never heard one person say that they enjoyed the cruise, everyone said that it was the worst cruise that they had been on and many had been cruising for 20 -30 years. BE WARNED.
i was on an msc cruise about 5 years ago and it was no better then . They lost my passport for 3 days ( which they found back in genoa ) even though they blamed me for having it and losing it ( i hold a canadian passport so it was taken from me at genoa no one in our party could eat the food so we ate off the boat as often as we could …. all the diabetic desserts were advertised as sweetened with fructose ( a sweet form of fruit sugar ) ( NOT FOR DIABETICS ) OUR WAITER ARGUED WITH US EVERY MEAL…then told me to go to the kitchen and tell the chef what i wanted and they would cook it ….it didnt put me off cruising as this is what i call a mickey mouse cruise but i will never go with msc again even though when i complained and submitted all our food bills off the ship they offered me a discount several times
My girlfriend and I went on the MSC Splendida in its 2nd month of cruising and were really looking forward to it after all the hype about the new ship. It was terrible, none of the staff knew anything about the ship, they only spoke to you if you were Italian (this is the same on Costa too) they really cater for the Italian market only.
The food in the buffet was terrible and not much better in the restaurant, the ship had been so badly designed that there was not enough room for everyone in the main restaurants at dinnertime so they had to close the buffet and use it at an extra restaurant. Despite the fact the ship was brand new the facilities weren’t great. We had a balcony cabin and the cleanliness was not of a high standard. we never saw our cabin steward during the 7 days we were on board..not the staffs fault as they are terribly overworked, not nearly enough staff.Entertainment was poor too and the on deck situation was not good with kids running wild everywhere.the only place to relax on deck was a tiny area right at the back which was a restricted adult area, far too small we were squished in like sardines.
this was 5years ago, what I have read about MSC since then has not changed my mind, we would never travel with either MSC or Costa (a whole other story…)again and never recommend them to anyone either.
MSC Yacht Club….Not quite up to the Hype. We paid ‘extra’ for this, but on reflection I doubt if we would ever sail with them again
Here are our PERSONAL views about our recent MSC yacht club experience on the Splendida.( April 2014) We have completed 6 previous cruises, but this was our first with MSC. We found a yacht club ‘deal’, and at the end of the day were pleased we did!. It may be of help to give the positives and negatives to help the reader, so here we go.
Positive: We flew to Nice to depart Genoa. No problems with the flight, or the transfer by coach (some 2.5hrs of travel). We were met at the cruise termional by our MSC ‘butler’, offered refreshmesnts and taken to the exclusive check in. All very polite, effeicient and professional. We were quickly taken to our cabin, and all this was a good experience.( but do remember this is Yacht Club, and we passed ques of folks just standing in the sun!! )
Negative: none really, perhaps it would be easier to fly to Genoa, but logistics or cost may make this not possible. At least it would save all the hassle of a long coach trip.
SHIP. Large resort ship. the YC area is a haven of peace. We liked the top sail lounge to relax. Again service here was good, with nibbles available ( of various quality ) at all times. Drinks are complimentary as advertised and also you can buy other brands, but we had no need to all week.
On exploring the ship we were pleased we had booked the YC. Constand bustle and activity, but then again, its a large ship. It is very clean and tastefull and easy to navigate. Staff were always polite and of help. The language barrier was not a problem as they do their best to cater fo everyone and all spoke English.
We did not spend much time in the various ‘bars’ as we kept in the main to YC. However:
Negative: Constant hassle by the ‘photgraphers’ to the point of pester. We just ignored it. Some nice photo’s, but we have our own camera.
Prices. were we gald we were in the YC!!. The usual 15% added on top of the price of ‘drinks’ alcohol or otherwise. Almost 7 Euro for a hot choc, then the 15%. Bar prices were steep, so unless you got a deal like ours or a ‘drinks package’ ( about 43 Euros per day for the top one on MSC !! ) it would cost the average drinker a fortune ( by the way on a recent Fred Olsen it cost £10 per day and NO 15% ! ).
This was one issue we found irritating. The ship is a floating rip off joint. They charge for everything. In some of the restautrants the staff just do not listen. I asked for tap water and was given a bottle of which they were happy to charge 2.95 Euros ( plus 15% ). We refused this and asked, as another couple did for 2 glasses of water which they did not charge us for. The waiter was not at all happy with this and had a face like thunder !..So much for customer service.
FOOD. we ate most of the time in the Olivio YC reataurant. Nice, but not great and nowhere near the ‘6 star’ experienced advertised, that was a joke. This was our biggest complaint. Service was good, but again at times confused as on a number of occasions we did not get what we asked for.
NEGATIVE We complained, as for the first three days the food was lukewarm, or on one occasion just cold. I ordered eggs benedict for breakfasrt one morning and just could not eat it, it was the most disgusting mess I have seen on a plate for ages, the chef; if you could call him that, was cluless.
We walked out and went to the Bora Bora buffet to find some hotter food. We complained and there as some improvement, but choice is limited.
Do not expeect many fresh vegatables, you will not get them. The italian pasta offerings are good, but you would not want to eat that all your cruise ?. We tried the main dinning room for breakfast once or twice and it was just OK. Don’t ask for toast, as I am sure they do not know what it is, and the omelets are a joke.
ENTERTAINMENT
TV in the room is not much use. Little in English. The stage shows ( about 1 hr ) were done very well mainly dance and music, but balanced well for an international audience. There was plenty of room in the theatre and it has good site lines. Quite impressed with this. Cruise director introduced the shows, and that was all we saw of him…So laid back he was almost asleep, a complete and utter waste of time !!.
Excursions. We pre booked some with Planet cruise ( but that is another story !!). No problmes on the trips we went on with MSC ( apart from being herded through the usual tourist crap shops as part of the tour ! ). The butler service was very effienct here, both in getting us on our trip coach and on quick return to the ship. Our main issue here was that MSC do not seem to allow much time in port. Port stays should be longer, as it all was a bit of a rush we felt. They give NO indication of port facilities or maps, you are on your own unless you have one of the ship tours
My wife used the spa once and said it was good. it certainly looked fine, but again top whack prices. The gym is good, and so were the private pool areas for YC and steam room and sauna.
Overall then, a clean ship, but let down by a number of issues. We would not sail with MSC again. Outside of YC they charge for everything, and we felt at a premium. Even if you do not drink alcohol ( and we only do moderately ) then it would get very expensive for a family. The food, even in our ‘exclusive’ venue was a let down. Considering this is such an important part of many cruise travelers experience it need some improvment. So nice in parts, but you can get better value elsewhere. DO NOT GO !…You have been warned.
Dr Malc
Totally agree with ALL the negative comments about MSC. We had the most dreadful 2013 Christmas Caribbean cruise on MSC Divina. We booked a complete cruise package with MSC. Our saga started when MSC put us on non-direct flights and we missed boarding the ship at Miami, due to flight delays in the U.S. After spending 3 shambolic days at the Miami Best Western Hotel, in the middle of nowhere, we finally boarded the ship in St Maarten by the skin of our teeth – this is another story. Once on board, the food was inedible, the service was appalling, and there was no proper supervision of the 1,000 children on board, most of whom ran riot almost 24 hours of the day. To top it all, we all left the ship with chest infections and my daughter was subsequently hospitalized with a bacterial lung infection. MSC have refused to pay us any compensation for the loss of 4 days of the cruise or for any expenses that we incurred, including long distance phonecalls to the UK, to get things sorted out. Instead MSC have offered us 10% off a next cruise with them. We would not get on another MSC ship even if it was offered to us free of charge!!!
RE Your emails and comments about M S C
What a load of moaners.
I will throw my tuppence worth in, just to balance things up here.
I have used MSC many times in the past, and just like everything else in life, nothing is perfect, neither are MSC.
However, I feel your original moaner, goes looking for faults, and I am sure SHE was wrong.about the time– they NEVER embark as early as 1130– impossible — no ship does.
There are areas MSC have fallen back on recently– namely evening shows, but over all the service is excellent and they go out their way to ensure customer satisfaction.
So Louise, I would suggest, the next time Mrs Leaver and her daughter call to book a holiday — send them to a holiday camp– that may suit them better.

To be fair i do understand bad service on the Opera, but i love MSC and cruise with them with proper loyalty, so much so we are top of the loyalty tier, They have some fantastic ships and i’ve cruised on many of them.
I have been embarrassed by things on the Opera, but it was the Passengers and not the cruise company itself. i am aware they are making this ship and the rest in the same class.
I don’t think you should give up on MSC this soon, they offer fantastic food, fantastic entertainment, great staff, and the Yacht Club is something to be tried. ive been told that MSC Fantasia is being sent to southampton in 2016 which offers the yacht club, this might be better for you on this massive ship.
preston.
I have been on two MSC cruises in the last seven months and previous to those I have sailed with NCL, Ocean Village and Royal Caribbean.
For what I paid for the two MSC cruises (Sinfonia and Opera), I cannot complain. Yes, there was the odd niggle like the poor quality of the bacon (nearly all fat), sausages and baked beans for breakfast on Sinfonia but all were vastly better on Opera.
Entertainment was lacking on both ships but obviously as MSC has passengers who speak several different languages it is no use having a comedian cracking jokes about British soap stars or politicians
Day time activities were lacking.
The TV in the cabins was also poor but I believe that new sets will be installed when both ships are stretched soon.
Would I go on MSC again? Yes. While not of the standard of Cunard, P&O, Royal Caribbean, etc, MSC is much cheaper. You get what you pay for.
The least I paid for a single cabin was on Sinfonia. For £37.50 per day I got all my food, entertainment and a cruise. You cannot even stay in a Travelodge hotel for that – and there is no food included there.
I had my first (and possibly last) cruise ever in 2011 to the UAE with MSC and was appalled at the so called ‘passenger representative’ onboard. The attitude was obstructive, inconsistent and certainly not passenger friendly when trying to get my £50 onboard credit that was due to me. Sadly the staff were obviously effected and voiced their opinions on how badly they were managed. The poor transfer/embarkation arrangements onto the ship at AbuDhabi was a total repeat of the previous persons experience with inadequate booking in facilities, overcrowded and hot waiting area and poor crowd control.
The ship itself was lovely, food access and quality good, entertainment very good, staff mostly accommodating; it was a shame they were let down by poor management.
I eventually got my £50 ‘onboard’ credit months later having pursued it to head office and will not be looking to ever use this company again.
Agree totally – worst cruise ever! Embarkation was a complete shambles, it was pointless paying for the drinks package because we could not get a drink.
We were also stopped from leaving ship as MSC had not put my husbands account on my credit card – although this had been instructed at embarkation. It must have been due to their system because there were lots of couples being stopped.
we were threatened with security guards because we were reluctant to join the hour long queue at reception. This was all for the cost of a bottle of water!
NEVER EVER AGAIN
I have only ever cruised with MSC Divina a couple of times and to be honest the only complaint I would have is the way they cater foodwise for US passengers on a Caribbean cruise. I.e Pizzas burgers and all that crap. Otherwise I found them a wonderful company and certainly never experienced anything like the negative reviews I read here.
Just returned today from a 7-day cruise on MSC Preziosa from Venice to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. Have been on cruises before but this was our first with MSC – and our last. The ship itself is fine – all glitzy bling – but the chief problem was the overcrowding. For a ship with 4,500 passengers it had capacity in facilities for just half that number, particularly in public seating, sunbeds and buffet areas etc. This caused much queueing and bad temper amongst passengers that doubtless caused aggression towards staff that understandably led to many of them being surly and unhelpful. Disembarkation at ports of call was chaotic, disorganised and frankly dangerous with hundreds of people left crowded onto stairwells in queues – truly a disaster waiting to happen. All in all it was quite a stressful experience, not the restful holiday one hopes for, and has put me off cruising for good. I would not recommend MSC to anyone.
Similar experience to many of the E.mails . Meals very skimpy on one evening we asked for chicken but as if by magic it had turned into rabbit Would not cruise with M.S.C.under any circumstances. Also cabins creaked and groaned all night ,and we were given every excuse under the sun as to the cause of this ….The ship was
the Fantasia…. Royal Carribean is another no.no..
Back to P&O & Fred Olsen…
We’ve been on 3 msc cruises the last 2 being nov and feb on Poesia to Buenos Aires and Armonia around Canaries. We had a fabulous time on both! Food on the whole was very good, entertainment bearing in mind mixed nationalties was excellent, setvice and staff again excellent. Main complaint would be embarking in Genoa and disembarking inBuenos Aires which was a nightmare but not nessarily all msc fault. We have cruised for many years 30plus cruises and would definitly cruise with them again. Msybe they do have a problem at the moment which needs orting out understand they have new CEO ex P&O?
and sights in Barcelona, it doesn’t come as a susirpre that the Catalonian port city saw a record breaking 2011 year with 2.6 million cruise passengers. Barcelona continues to be a world class destination
