With news of Tropical Storm Erika hurtling towards the Caribbean and Hurricane Danny leaving a right old mess in his wake, I thought I’d take this opportunity to give you even more reasons to cruise (incase you didn’t have enough reasons already).
‘Why would talk of a hurricane make me want to go on a cruise?’ I hear you say!
Well, lets set the scene.
You’ve booked a two week holiday to a beautiful Caribbean island, all inclusive in a lovely hotel right on the beach. It’s taken you months to save up, you’ve read up about that destination, planned what you’re going to do each day. Then, a couple of weeks before you’re due to go, you hear there’s a hurricane in the area. You check the weather in the area online every day over the next few days. It’s getting closer. It’s definitely getting closer. Then comes the email or call from your Travel Agent.
‘Because of the risk of damage and to safety and the weather conditions, we’ve had no other option but to cancel your holiday. We’re really sorry but you can choose another holiday if you like?’
But……I had so much planned! And I booked my flights myself! AND NOW I’M NOT COVERED AND WON’T GET MY MONEY BACK! (Making sure you’re covered by an ATOL license is a whole-nother blog post).
Lets try something else.
You’ve booked a two week cruise to many beautiful Caribbean islands, you even got that drinks package included free because you booked so far in advance so got the best deal and you have on board credit to pay for some excursions to get to some beautiful beaches. Then, a couple of weeks before you’re due to go, you hear there’s a hurricane in the area . You check the weather in the area online every day over the next few days. It’s still there and not getting weaker. Then comes the email from your Travel Agent (that’s me by the way).
‘Because of the risk of damage and to safety, instead of going to that island, we’re going to go to this one instead. The rest of your itinerary isn’t affected at all. We hope you have a wonderful time.’
Well, that’s ok. I still get to go on holiday! And it’s one port out of a whole cruise and I won’t get blown away!
You see, a cruise ship can move and avoid a storm. A hotel can’t.
That’s all from me.
Happy cruising!
p.s. Has your itinerary ever been affected by a storm? Or something else? Let me know what the outcome was.
