What if there’s a way around the ‘single supplement’?

Anyone who has ever tried to book a cruise as a single passenger will be all too familiar with the ‘single supplement’ that cruise lines charge.

You see a fantastic offer for a cruise, call to get a price and the cruise line are charging almost double for you to have the cabin to yourself.

Some cruise lines have introduced single cabins but they’re still at a (lower) supplement.

I can understand this is frustrating for solo travellers but also understand it from the cruise lines point of view.  By only having one passenger in the cabin, they’re losing revenue if they don’t charge you for the second passenger that could be in that cabin and also in onboard sales (drinks, excursions etc).  One way to  think of it is as a ‘per cabin’ price.  The cost of the cabin is £1000.  If there are two of you it gets split so £500 each.  If there’s just one of you, there’s no one to split it with yet you still get the whole cabin.

However, what if there was a way round this?  What if you could meet and talk to other potential solo travellers and then share a cabin with them?

Some cruise lines (back in the day) used to pair up single travellers by sex, age, interests and put them in cabins together but that’s a thing of the past.

Would this interest you?  I guess it’d be a bit like a ‘dating’ site but without the dating.  You use a site to find someone looking for a similar cruise to you (or the same one if you have something specific in mind) and then chat to them. Get to know them over a period of time and then see if it would work with you sharing a cabin.  You make a new friend and save yourself lots of money!

What are your thoughts? Are you a solo traveller and would you do this?
