Passenger falls overboard

It was very sad to hear of the latest case of a passenger falling overboard from a cruise ship.
The latest incident was on Carnival Liberty and the passenger was reported missing by her friends on Friday, hours after going missing.
Unfortunately the search was called off without the British passenger being found.
When someone is reported missing on a cruise ship the whole ship is searched before they are confirmed as being overboard. This is because it is pretty easy to lose someone on a cruise ship as they may have simply gone to another venue on board, then if you are all looking for each other it can be difficult given the size and layout of the ships.
Once the search is complete then the coastguard is notified and a search begins.
They also search through CCTV images for any ideas as to what has happened
On this occasion the passenger was seen sitting on the railings before plunging to sea.
It is strictly forbidden to sit on any railings on a cruise liner for obvious reasons and it still amazes me that people choose to do so.
I don’t know the circumstances of this case but I know in the past it is often fuelled by too much alcohol. Do the cruise lines need to take responsibility on the alcohol they serve and the unlimited drinks packages they are very keen to sell or should it be the individual’s responsibility to know their limits and not overdo it ?
Technology is still being tested to deal with people going overboard within the cruise industry.
Someone did ask me recently if it is safe to take children on a cruise ship as they were worried for their safety if they wandered off . The answer to this was they are completely safe and it is actually very difficult to simply fall of a cruise ship. Children always need supervision anyway but not for the risk of falling off the ship . They need the usual supervision of any holiday abroad and especially around the swimming pools as not many ships have lifeguards.
Cruising is a very safe holiday environment for anyone providing you follow the same precautions of any holiday.
My thoughts go out to the family at this very sad time.
