Free Wifi is this an essential for your holiday ?

WIFI seems to be one of the most important factors now days when people are considering booking a cruise. We used to offer free car parking or on board credit as extra incentives for booking but now we are finding that people would rather have free internet.
Cruise lines are also starting to offer this as an alternative to their booking campaigns and whilst it will never take over from the free drinks packages I think it is becoming a close second.
When I go on holiday I can’t think of anything worse than connecting to the internet. I like to completely switch off and forget all about emails and social media sites but I do realise that more and more people have to work whilst they are away so I appreciate it is essential for them.
However I think it is families that seem to need the internet packages now because their children can’t seem to manage a few weeks away without this.
On my family holiday in Greece this year I was amazed by how many people crammed themselves into the small room by reception to make use of the free wifi. They sat there all night playing games on their phones or looking through social media sites and never spoke to each other the whole time. In the restaurants kids were even sat on their phones at the dinner table and didn’t bother speaking to each other even whilst having their evening meal.
My kids were not allowed to take their phones or tablets out to dinner and luckily they didn’t want to either. My daughters friend has just come back from a lovely holiday in Cyprus but didn’t enjoy it and couldn’t wait to get home because she hadn’t got free wifi !!
What happened to kids being happy swimming or playing on the beach on holiday ?
With current technology children are not learning any social skills and their parents are not helping.
