The start of the Euro’s hasn’t gone too well for England in more ways than one with our so called fans running riot in France and causing injury to people and damage to property.
I know it is the minority and not just English fans but it makes the rest of us feel very ashamed. How awful for genuine fans that they can’t go and enjoy the game without fear of being attacked inside or outside the stadium.
The port of Marseille is very popular with cruise ships calling regularly at this beautiful city in the South of France. It is the oldest and second largest city in France and has much to offer including a vibrant harbour, ancient history and a beautiful old town.
So if you are worried about visiting whilst on your cruise during the tournament rather than staying on board here are a few ideas of things you can do if you would prefer to avoid the harbour area.
Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde – on a breathtaking hilltop location and is one of the most important landmarks of Marseille which can be seen from afar
Basilique Saint Victor – dedicated to the martyr Saint Victor this house of worship once belonged to an abbey founded in the 5th century. The exterior has the feel of a medieval fortress and the church has a special aura because of its ancient beginnings
Le Panier – the oldest quarter of Marseille and situated on a hillside. This is the historic and cultural heart of the city
Chateau D’Ilf – this is a short ferry ride from the port. This boasts spectacular scenery with protected coves, turquoise waters and limestone cliffs.
Let’s hope the violence stops and everything can return to normal. The French people have been through so much recently and now they have this to deal with.
Have you been to Marseille on a cruise recently and did it affect your plan’s ?
