Casual Cruising

Cruise ships in general have become a lot more relaxed of their enforcement of dress codes.

Most cruise lines now will not enforce their daily dress code even in the main dining room and it is not appreciated by those who enjoy a more traditional cruise.

Years ago cruising was a luxury only afforded by the more wealthy. People expected there to be formal nights and everyone participated. When I started cruising 24 years ago the formal nights were a very grand affair and gentleman wore tuxedos and the ladies were in evening gowns or cocktail dresses. Now days people are even going to dinner in jeans and t-shirts and in some case shorts !!

I realise that times change and cruising is more affordable now so is attracting the package holiday market where a summer dress and casual clothes are the normal attire. Also people lead very stressful lives now and probably don’t want the formality of having to dress for dinner on formal nights. However I think a cruise is one of the only times these days where we have the opportunity to really dress up and enjoy ourselves so why not embrace it and look the part. It all adds to the excitement  and makes a really glamorous evening. After all I am sure most of us ladies don’t need an excuse to hit the streets for a shopping spree. My colleagues are all preparing for our works Christmas party on Queen Mary 2 and already there is much debate on what everyone is wearing. Sadly I am unable to go this time because it is my daughter’s birthday ( very selfish of her for having a birthday so near to Christmas ) so while I am up to my eyes in fairy cakes they will all be getting glammed up ready for their night out.

If there is anyone who just wants to cruise but really doesn’t want any dress codes there are cruises out there. Norwegian Cruise Line are completely informal and don’t have any dress codes or fixed dinner sittings so this would be a perfect cruise.

If you are cruising with a line such as Cunard you should really expect the formal nights and dress accordingly. If you don’t want to take part you can always visit the fantastic buffet.
