It has been reported that angry cruise passengers have had to be forcibly removed from Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas.
On arrival into Shanghai cruise terminal approximately 300 passengers refused to disembark the ship as they were unhappy with the change of itinerary. Their cruise was due to visit Japan but the ship’s captain made the decision to change the itinerary to South Korea to avoid Typhoon Goni.
I can understand how disappointing this would be and luckily it is very rare but I think this is a situation where they didn’t have much choice.
The safety of passengers and crew members are always the highest priority for any cruise line and I for one would not want to sail rough seas in a typhoon !!
Japan is the fastest growing cruise destination this year and was obviously the reason why they had chosen this specific cruise but if the captain feels it is not safe they have the right to adjust the itinerary without notice. They are covered in their terms and conditions and there is very little point in getting irate to the point where you have to be physically removed by the crew members.
From what I understand management from the cruise line met with angry passengers in a nearby hotel to discuss their options and any relevant compensation.
They were all given free WIFI on board and lobster dinners to try and help smooth things over.
When you book a cruise you have to understand that itineraries can change due to exceptional circumstances but I think this is a benefit because if you are booked on a land based holiday and there are typhoons or hurricanes you can’t simply sail away from the problem like you can on a cruise ship.
