So what cabin location do I go for?

So, following on from my monologue regarding cabin types 2 weeks ago, I thought I would comment on location, location, location!

Having been part of the crew, I’ve been taught to never be fussy about location (having lived on deck 0, and all the way forward, near the thrusters, on deck 1!), but I appreciate it can make a difference to your onboard experience.  My main tips are as follows:

1/ Unless you have mobility issues, try to be away from the main stair-wells and lifts, as these areas attract conglomerations of people throughout the day, and could result in peripheral noise disturbing your sleep, although modern ships are pretty-well soundproofed.  As a general rule, the further away from any stairs you are, the less footfall you will encounter, and you’re more likely to have that oasis of peace and tranquility where you sleep!

2/ Avoid decks with public areas close by, or immediately above or beneath you.  Not so bad if it’s just the library, but if it’s the nightclub, restaurant, pool deck or theatre, you may suffer a bit of disturbance.  As a general rule, the more of other cabins that surround you, in all directions, the better!

3/ If you are concerned about motion-sickness, try to get a cabin nearer the middle of the ship, rather than forward or aft, as this will reduce the overall sway of the ocean.

4/ Unless you have a family of your own travelling in adjacent cabins, try to avoid the randomly-positioned ‘interconnecting’ cabins, as these will have an unsightly door along one wall, and won’t tend to be as well sound-proofed as the single-door cabins.

5/ Some outside cabins on lower decks, particularly on older ships, tend to have round ‘porthole’ windows rather than rectangular ‘picture’ windows, so to maximise your window size, always try to go for a cabin with a ‘picture’ window, although these are usually a little more expensive than the ‘porthole’ cabins.
