Well it looks like the airports may be closing again due to the ash cloud. Fortunately this time we are more prepared and can offer our customers help and advice in advance.

If your flight is cancelled and you booked the flights as part of a package with the cruise line, they will refund you or try and rearrange the flights and cruise for you. If they can get you out to another a port of call to join the cruise they will.

If you booked your flights and cruise separately, the cruise line will NOT refund you, if you fail to make the cruise. You will then need to try and claim on your travel insurance. It appears that about 50% of insurance companies covered customers last time.

Cruise lines cannot say in advance if your flights are likely to be cancelled and you will need to keep an eye on airline websites.

1. I booked a family cruise for 8 (2 cabins)paying all expenses for them. It is with Holland America and the 3rd and 4th passenger are free. I provided names for each cabin to travel agent in no particular order. Now one of the adults in cabin 2 cannot go, but there are still 2 adults in the cabin. Since 2 are fully paid and 3rd and 4th are free, there shouldn’t be any extra charges due to cancellation, right?

2. Without seeing the booking and your travel agents terms and conditions I wouldn’t be able to give a 100% answer. However my understanding is, that if it is more than 56 days before departure then you should be paying for 2 adults/cabin only. You wouldn’t get anything back for the cancelled adult as the 3rd person would be taking their place. They may also charge an admin fee/name change. However if you are within 56 days they would charge you to cancel the adult and charge you the adult fare for passenger 3. The charges are generally governed by the cruise line – what are they charging?
