Single fares are they fair?

One of the great things about cruises is that they are the perfect holiday for people who travel on there own. They offer great deal of comfort for the single traveller as you have a lovely secure atmosphere onboard, great service and standards, wonderful food and the chance to visit several destinations in the one trip and more often than not like minded people looking for the same experience.

So It all sounds great and should appeal to most people who are on there own for one reason or another but a lot wont cruise and this is due to the cost. Now this is not due to cruising being expensive as at the moment cruising is as good value as it has ever been. The reason a lot wont cruise is the price of cruising for a single can often be the same price as for two people and on principal a lot of people would not book on that basis.

You would be surprised by the amount of people we get on a daily basis who see a cruise that is advertised which are always based on 2 sharing and then ask for the details. I always feel sorry for them when we check the details and then more often than not find the cost is double what they have seen. Most will complain about this and say it is unjust and I am inclined to agree. I do understand that mainly they are taking a cabin that would hold 2 or more so the cruise lines would be losing out if they sold it at the same per person price. However that one person will certainly not eat and drink as much as two people and food is always included in the cost and drinks are being included in the cost with a lot of the cruise lines now.

I do feel the cruise lines need to look at who the single cruisers are, Most are past passengers who have travelled with them several times with partners who are sadly no longer with them. I think that when they build new ships and refurbish ships already in service that more single cabins should be made available. It would also be good to see them in different cabin types from Inside to Balcony as they are manly just inside cabins for the few that are available.

The Cruise lines I recommend for solo travellers are Norwegian Cruise Lines as they have a lot of Studio cabins on the NCL Epic which sails out of Barcelona and Rome. They also have a singles lounge which is great to relax and meet others and offer great Value for Money and a relaxed cruising feel. Cruise and Maritime Voyages have a limited number of singles but do will do a reduced supplement on a lot of the cruises with a 50% supplement rather than 100% that a lot of other charge. They also have really interesting itineraries and loads of regional departures on sailing from the UK. Cunard have a few single cabins but even if you have to pay the full supplement I would still recommend as they have dance hosts and are very good at allocating singles together for meals so easier to make friends.
