Cricket Groupie.
This coming Sunday sees the end of another Cricket season at Alvechurch and Hopwood Cricket Club, favourite haunt of my youngest son Tom who has played there for the last four seasons, and what a fantastic year it has been. He has played for the Under 15’s, and the Senior 2nd and 4th teams most weekends, notching up some serious runs and taking some very impressive wickets. He is currently working on his spin bowling so he tells me. This is obviously going to be next seasons secret weapon!
I can usually be found somewhere on the boundary in my deckchair with a goodly flask of coffee and some cake showing my support, although he has scolded me for shouting encouragement when he’s bowling!
An outstanding day this season was the 18th of June when two teams from the club took part in an 18 hour Cricket Marathon, starting at 4am, to raise funds for the clubs youth teams and Noahs Ark, a bereavement charity that works with children. The sum raised was over £4500 – another huge thanks to everyone at cruise.co.uk who sponsored Tom.
I somehow found myself elected as a vice-president of the club last year and thus became a member of the Social Committee. This seems to involve me making huge pots of Chilli and Curry for any event at the club, running youngsters around to various matches, and supplyig vast quantities of burgers for the many barbeques at the club. A great night this season was one of the world cup matches. Here’s a great photo of the clubs President who was obviously having a fine old time – I’m a sort of one woman Catering Corp! Keeps me out of mischief I suppose!
Anyway, on the bright side, I only need to get the grass stains out of the whites one more time this year – I’m an expert in this field if anybody needs any tips!
Oh well, time to get the rugby kit out of mothballs I suppose…………
