Shore Excursions – The ‘Unofficial Guide’ – Part Three……
Going It Alone….
If you are going to use a taxi from the port be prepared to barter! Taxi drivers will really try it on, charging up to double the real fare, so be firm with them.
Only go in a taxi alone in a port where you have good knowledge of the area or are staying relatively close to the ship, and take some ID with you, though preferably not your passport.
Some ships will provide you with ID tags or a pass to hand in when you return to a ship. This is useful as they will be aware if you have not returned, but be warned, ships will not wait for missing passengers, so get back to the ship in plenty of time.
If possible, go ashore in a group, never alone. And remember to take hats, drinks and suntan lotion with you.
Make sure your Travel Insurance covers you for independent excursions.
Finally, always take the name of the ships port agent and telephone numbers with you. These can usually be found in the ships Daily Program.
