Drinks surcharges on ships have long been a bone of contention – especially on the American cruise lines, some of whom charge around 18%. So how do you get round this?
We all know that most cruise lines won’t allow you to take alcohol on board and will confiscate it at the port, to be returned when you disembark (yeah, sure they will !). Having said this, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity will now allow you to take two bottles on board these days – not a lot I hear you say.
I think it’s time to be a little more creative! One of my clients yesterday came up with a brilliant idea – a hot water bottle! I think that has to be worth a try!
Another good idea is to decant the alcohol into a babys beaker or water bottle, place it in your luggage and put a pack of condoms on top of it. Once the condoms are spotted this will deter the port official from delving any deeper!
Another idea is to fill empty toiletry containers, although I don’t fancy the taste of Herbal Essences with my gin thank you, any more than I fancy the minty freshness of mouthwash with it.
Has anybody got any other suggestions? Or have you successfully smuggled booze onto a ship? Do let us know for future reference!

I think your article would be more useful if you provided more information about the various operators and the charges and conditions they apply. I’m not sure that any of the cruise lines you represent would apprciate your support for smuggling booze.
