Dietary Dilemas – Is cruising an option for Coeliacs?

This is a subject close to my heart as I have to maintain a Gluten-free diet, and I know how difficult it can be when you’re away from home to avoid the foods that cause you problems and at the same time eat enough. So, how good are cruise ships at catering for Coeliacs? Is there anybody out there who can share their experiences with us to help other cruisers out?

As a Cruise Consultant there are a few things I would advise you do be fore you cruise. Always tell us at the time of booking what your dietary requirement is. We can then let the ship know, so they will be expecting you.  When you board the cruise ship, usually on the first day, you can meet up with the chef to talk him through your requirements.
If you dine in the main dining room, you will become familiar with your waiter, and you won’t have to keep repeating yourself every time you eat.
If you have children with special dietary needs don’t forget to let the Kids Clubs know what they are.
If you’ve been following my blog, you will know that I’ve been looking at options for vegetarians on board ships and from what they tell me they’re not fairing very well. Are the Coeliacs amongst us doing any better?
