Baked Alaska – is it overcooked?

Believe it or not, one of the things that seems to irritate cruise goers more than anything is Baked Alaska Parades in the main dining rooms! I personally have never seen one, and can’t understand what is so exciting about Baked Alaska that would make anyone think to parade it around.
However, apparantly they do and it is a source of great irritation to some.
At Christmas, I was on the Fred Olsen Balmoral (great ship) with my colleagues, and had the misfortune to order  – you’ve guessed it, Baked Alaska for dessert. Oh how I wish I hadn’t! The soggy mass on my plate was such a disappointment after what had otherwise been a fabulous meal of Lobster, Crab, and Roast Sirloin of Beef. One of my colleagues became quite excited and said ‘Oh I wonder if they will do a parade’, as this is par for the course. Fortunately on this occasion they didn’t. I would have squirmed with embarassment if the arrival of my dessert had been accompanied by a fanfare and the attention of every diner present. I do so feel for the poor people who have a birthday or anniversary on board – public humiliation is a must on these occasions!
Is there anything that really gets your goat on cruise ships? I’d love to hear about it.
