From the responses I’ve had so far it seems that the answer is a resounding yes! I didn’t realise that this was such a problem for cruise-going Vegetarians, apart from the obvious Pasta Bolognese at dinner when you have a limited menu.
I can’t believe that you pay the money you do to go on cruises and then have to survive on Jacket Potatoes for the duration!
And Potato Cake with half an apple and apple sauce on QM2? What is that all about? Also, I said that I wasn’t vegetarian, but even I know that soups made from meat or chicken stock are a no no, so why don’t highly trained chefs know this?
I have to say, I am almost speechless. And people who know me will be rendered speechless themselves by that bold statement!
Can anyone tell me whether the Buffet-style dining rooms give much selection? I mean, apart from the obvious bacon/shellfish in salads, which I have seen myself. This said, why should Vegetarians miss out on the formal dining experience that is so much to be enjoyed on ships?
I feel very sorry for the lady who had to have soup specially made, and point this out at each meal. Very embarrassing. I myself am Gluten Intolerant and on one occasion, attending a birthday party was given Chicken Goujons covered in breadcrumbs. The hostess (?) said to me, in front of all the other guests, “Oh I thought you could just scrape the breadcrumbs off”! I know how it feels to be an afterthought!
Another question for you – if Vegetarians have these problems with food on ships, how do Vegans survive? Do they die of starvation during the cruise? Or do they just stay at home? Are there any Vegans out there who can comment?
Please keep the feedback coming in. I feel the need to get more ‘personal experiences’ on this subject. This one is going to gather momentum I feel. Watch this space!
