Are Fred Olsen cruises only for the Golden Oldies?

If I had a pound for every time some said to me ‘I don’t fancy Fred Olsen, it’s for old people’ I would be wealthy enough to retire.

I have been on both the Black Watch and the Balmoral, and I had a great time on both, with an excellent mix of ages on board, and two of my (younger) colleagues have each spent a fortnight on the Braemar and said exactly the same. One of these girls has a five year old son, and she says that the kids clubs on board were terrific.
Ok, so these ships don’t have ice-skating rinks and flowriders, or dedicated childrens zones but they are still great for family holidays in my opinion. Much less like floating hotels and more like real ships, but that’s just my personal opinion.

What I would really like is to get some feedback from people of all ages who have sailed with Freds, and get all of your opinions. What age range do you fall into? Did you travel as a family, and if so, did the kids enjoy themselves? Be honest, we all know that the average age on Freds is supposedly 45 plus, but was that the case when you were on board? Do any of their ships appeal to younger/older people more, and if so why do you think that is?

Maybe Fred Olsen is an undiscovered treasure in the cruising world for the young at heart amonst us! I need to know soon, otherwise I will be falling into the 45 plus bracket anyway!

  1. Sailed on Boudicca’s transatlantic crossing last April for my 40th with dh who who is in his mid 40’s. We were in the younger end of the age group although not the youngest. There were no children on board, although this could have been the time of year and the fact that at 17 days it was a slightly longer cruise. The food was excellent, the service and entertainment (with one exception) of a very good standard. The ship was elegant and of a size big enough to feel spacious and yet small enough to give it a real friendly feel. We met some lovely people and had a fantasctic time. Age after all is just a number. We would not hesitate to use Fred Olsen again.
