How To Make A Bad Situation Worse?
Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few days you can’t have failed to see the news regarding the sad demise of the travel institution that was Thomas Cook. Travel has faced some terrible obstacles over the past few years – bird flu, terrorism and financial uncertainty to name just three, but in my heart I never thought that a company that had been around for so long would disappear virtually overnight.
Whatever the reasons, my first thoughts have been with my former colleagues who now find themselves in the awful position of having to find a new job. As travel agents we often joke that travel is like a family – some stay, some leave, there are arguments but when push comes to shove we support one another and it has been heartening to read the messages of support this week and also the links to job adverts and advice on what and how to move forward!
However, on the flip side, I don’t think the same can be said for the big bosses and share holders of some travel companies and airlines – they don’t seem to be supporting those thousands of travel customers who have found themselves without a holiday, they must think Christmas has arrived early – there are some incredible tales of such price hikes on flights and holidays that it would make your hair turn white – flights that originally cost £1000.00 now £6000.00, a wedding for 2020 that was originally £5000.00 is now £5000.00 more for the exact thing – how can this be right – yes, I know that there is supply & demand and the airlines and travel companies aren’t a charity – but come on that is nothing more than profiteering in my eyes – do you agree? Have you been affected by this? How much more have you had to pay?
