I have to admit it was very exciting watching the media coverage last week as Quantum Of The Seas arrived in Southampton. I am a real sucker for these events and am always astounded at the size, grace etc of these cruise ships.
Many of my colleagues were lucky enough to spend a couple of nights on board sampling the food, entertainment and facilities. I have to say though – with generally mixed reviews.
But enough with Quantum and these gazillion tonne ships, been there, done that and got the t shirt!
Lets’s not forget P & O’s latest addition to the fleet which launches next March, Britannia. It’s possibly our British way of doing things – she has slipped under the radar slightly, but rest assured, her progress to completion is being closely monitored and P & O are steadily keeping us informed on her developments.
Food and dining options – a topic close to my heart – these sound fantastic especially Epicurean, a fine dining alternative, which will offer the very best of modern British cuisine fused with classic dining – look at a sneak preview of the main dishes:-
• Salt Marsh lamb rack with slow cooked glazed lamb breast and mini crafted shepherd’s pie: samphire shoots, butternut squash purée and a rosemary and mint jelly
• Butter poached lobster tail and glazed pavé of boneless beef short rib: sour cream crushed new potatoes and a melting cheese lollipop
• Loin of wild boar with a smoked pork cheek croquette and Lancashire black pudding: beetroot and blackberry cabbage, vanilla charred pear and boulangère potatoes
• Herb roasted poulet de Bresse: chicken pastilla, vegetable dauphinoise, baby leeks, morel velouté and chorizo Foam
Delicious!
Forget dodgem cars, flying simulators and the like -I would rather improve my cooking skills in the James Martin cookery school – wouldn’t you?
I am sure there is room enough on the high seas for all these new cruise ships but I can’t wait to find out how Britannia will compare.
