QM2 getting ready for a face lift…

Cunard announced last week that the iconic flag ship the Queen Mary 2 will spend 25 days in dry dock for a refurbishment after her world tour at the end of May 2016.

This magnificent ocean liner will undergo some major work with the addition of 15 single cabins and 30 Britannia Club cabins. 

Cunard have been working closely with London based SMC Design, whom will undertake the work of refurbishment and will introduce completely new areas and venues to the ship, from cabins to dining, as well as refreshing existing areas.

It is said that they will be taking inspiration from the original Queen Mary and enhance existing designs as well as implement a decorative overhaul, looking to emphasize the feeling of understated elegance.

Cunard marketing director, Angus Struthers, said: “As well as being the most famous ship in the world, Queen Mary 2 is the most important and iconic so it is essential to keep her in excellent condition and ensure that what she offers is continually ahead of the rest. “The work undertaken so far has been an impressive collaboration between ourselves, SMC and thousands of Cunard guests to ensure we are taking the right approach with our flagship. SMC Design has an unrivalled reputation and, having worked with them on several prestigious Cunard projects in the past, we have every confidence in their ability to produce a revitalised and stunning flagship in 2016. What is already a magnificent ship will become even more magnificent.”

I was fortunate enough to sail on the QM2 last December and I really do hope that they do not change too much of this beautiful ship. Of course with anything after time certain areas do need to be freshened up which was clear to see in some areas of the ship, but then again the charm of the QM2 is the traditional feel and you just hope that with any refurbishment they will keep sympathetic to the style that Cunard guests have come to adore.

I shall look forward to seeing how the refurbishment turns out and hope that some of the most beautiful areas of the ship are left alone…
