For Christmas, my parents bought me a Thrill Day Experience of driving 2 super cars, something I have never done but have always wanted to do. When the voucher arrived it offered the chance to drive the choice of a Lamborghini, Porsche, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Jaguar F Type, Mustang and an Audi R8.
So after a long wait of 4 months, the day finally came for me to head back to cold, wet UK and drive the supercars of my choice. I picked the experience to be held at North Weald Air Field in Essex.
Now if you read my blogs, you will know I am not that lucky with weather (see 3 blog posts ago) and the day I arrived back into London the sun was shining and the clouds was white. The next day (day of experience) told a different story, the clouds was grey, the sun had disappeared and the rain had come to greet me. Thanks for that…
So off I headed with my friends in tow to the airfield and now nervous because driving on a wet track wasn’t what I wanted to do (I watch Top Gear, so know it slows you down and can make the car harder to handle!!) My partner was disappointed that I did not have to dress up in a suit and helmet, cause he said that would have made his day.
After a briefing on safety and being asked not to damage hundreds of thousands pounds worth of cars, it was time to get ready to check out the track and pick our cars. Being the cautious person I am, I did opt to pay an extra £25 to cover me for any excess in case of damage, as a small cone tapping the car could cause thousands in damage, a risk I was not willing to take.
I chose to drive the Aston Martin and the Ferrari, the first being a dream car and the second purely for the experience. The Lamborghini just doesn’t do it for me. Which turned out to be a good call as the majority of the others (all men I might like to add) had all opted for the Lambo.
After a quick tour of the track in a normal car, it was time to get in the Aston for my first drive. The car did not disappoint. My professional co-driver John was great (now a potential first time cruiser) and because we was chatting and laughing we lost count of how many laps I had done, so my 8 laps I was meant to do actually turned into about 10!! Result. Unfortunately though, he wouldn’t let me leave the track with the car, great shame.
Then it was time for the Ferrari, and what a completely different experience. This was the thrill ride of the day. I can’t begin to describe the feeling, the best way is to experience it yourself..
There was several heart in mouth moments as I was told to give it all I had with both cars along the straight and in the Ferrari with all that power was exhilarating. One I will never forget.
So thank you to my gorgeous parents for the gift of driving my dream car, now can you please buy me one?
Dawn xx
