Red boobies, blue boobies!
Actually the official term is red footed boobies and blue footed boobies which of course are birds that live in the Galapagos Islands! What else did you think I was talking about?
Many people are now looking for new destinations and although not new the Galapagos should definitely be on your bucket list for an expedition style cruise.
The Galapagos Archipelago is one of the most diverse and biologically outstanding areas on earth according to UNESCO. It is made up of 13 major islands and 7 smaller ones.
In order to reach the Galapagos Islands you must first fly to either Quito or Guayaquil in Ecuador then take another flight to one of the Islands, either Baltra or San Cristobal, your final trip is in a zodiac to reach your ship then your adventure begins.
Because of the ecological diversity of the Islands then a definite interest in wildlife and conservation is a must for a cruise to these islands so you can fully be awe stricken at the beauty and complexity of the abundant species of wildlife.
My top 6 species that to me embody the Galapagos are:
Footed boobies
There are three types of boobies – red, blue and masked and watching these dive bomb the ocean in search of fish is a must.
Galapagos Penguins
One of the world’s smallest penguins.
Galapagos Giant Tortoise
Their current estimated population is 15000 and there were 11 species however “Lonesome George”, who was the last of the Pinta Tortoises, died a few years ago having never found a mate.
Galapagos Green Turtle
This is the only turtle to breed on the islands and it normally nests between December to June.
Sally-lightfoot Crab
Often seen in large numbers and a photographers dream because of their vibrant colours.
Galapagos Fur Seal
And finally the undeniably cute fur seal who can be found hiding in shady spots on rocky cliffs.
There are two main lines that cruise in the Galapagos and they are Celebrity and Silverseas so for more details on cruises to the Galapagos and prices please contact me.
