Don’t be surprised if the next time your sailing on the Queen Mary you may be sharing the ship with Amanda Whittaker on her way to New York to visit the love of her life. Not quite your typical long distance romance as she wouldn’t be doing the transatlantic crossing for the man of her dreams, but the statue of her dreams. The 27 year old shop assistant from Leeds has a condition called objectum sexuality where people fall in love with things rather than people. Amanda first fell for the statue when a pal in New York posted a picture of the Statue online. Since then she has visited the 151ft statue in person four times, caressing it and leaning out of a window to kiss its hair. She has even thought about marrying it — but decided against it “because so many others love her too”.
Some people may have a crush on their favourite boy band or group and stick up a few posters, buy the yearly calendar and all the albums and Amanda takes her obsession just as seriously. She has made a shrine in her living room featuring a 6ft replica, hundreds of smaller models and ornaments and a huge us flag. She is quoted as saying “Other people might be shocked to think I can have romantic feelings for an object, but I am not the same as them.”
I think that maybe next time you’re on your cruise if you see a woman coming towards you with an “I love Libby” t shirt on you should definitely walk the other way !!!!
