My Son and his “Titanic weekend”

My little boy Louie is like every typical seven year old boy where he seems to go through stages of being obsessed with certain things. We’ve had it all – two weeks nonstop of watching back to the future, Jls album on repeat for a month, Michael Jackson which lasted the longest I’d say where we had the computer game that taught us the moves, his moonwalker film, the Billie Jean outfit and his Nan even took him to a theatre show of all the Michael Jackson songs……… It got so bad at one point that if i heard one more line of man in the mirror I was going to scream!!!! So surprise, surprise he comes home from school on Friday opens his book bag and pulls out his reading book which is entitled – The Danger Zone, avoid sailing on the Titanic. So it begins, the million and one questions on every finer point and detail of the Titanic cruise ship. It’s fair to say he was absolutely amazed buy it all , as we turned through all the pages and he found out exactly what happened and why the story is so famous.
When I told him that the story was real and had happened a hundred years ago this April he just couldn’t believe it and as you can imagine was a bit concerned about mommy selling cruises and going on them but I did hasten to add that this happened a long time ago and wouldn’t never happen in this modern age. My boy is a bright lad and has his finger on the pulse as he was quick to point out “but what about that ship on the news the other week mommy???” errmmm yes well we won’t mention that!!!!

Anyway so after we had researched the book cover to cover it wasn’t long before he was aware that there was also a big film made about it all so as a treat for movie night on Saturday we rented out a copy. I was slightly concerned that he would find it a bit scary on screen as he is a sensitive boy and doesn’t like to see people get hurt (blood on Eastenders is tomato sauce but he still runs out of the room!!) Anyway Movie on, popcorn in hand I left him to it and went downstairs to watch my own programmes. Low and behold not long into it and he comes running down the stairs looking sheepish. I asked him if he was ok and I had to chuckle “Mom I don’t like it, its sinking” This is after we had spent all day talking about it so I’m not quite sure why this was such a shock to him – maybe he though the film version had a happier ending !!

For all you Titanic Boffs here are a few interesting facts out of his book:

*ship weighed 47,070 tonnes

*269m in length

*29 Boilers each weighing over 100 tonnes

*Four Funnels, but only three in use as stern funnel was for ventilation

*The completed ship cost £1,300,000 in 1912

*Titanic’s food store included 4,990 kg fresh fish, 3,402kg bacon and ham , 40 tonnes of potatoes and 1,000 bottles of wine.
