BEWARE !!!! Piece of paper that cost me £60

Last weekend was one I had been looking forward to for a long while now as it was our girly weekend away to celebrate my friends 30thbirthday.  After much debate and talk we decided upon a three night stay in Benidorm.  Not everyone’s first thought but the flights were cheap as chips and we found a really nice hotel and the transfers were easy so we went ahead and booked it late last year.  There were nine of us in total and we were all so excited as most of us have children and live busy lives so the thought of chilling out and relaxing and doing whatever we pleased was very exciting indeed.  As it was only for three nights we decided we would not be paying the £50 hold luggage fee that Ryanair charged and that we would be more then capable of cramming everything into a little hand luggage suitcase.  After much squeezing and prodding and shoving I closed my case , picked up my passport and my keys and was ready for the off but just before I left I realised that I hadn’t printed off my Boarding cards so I quickly switched on the computer and printed off.

I had done my online check in earlier in the week but left the boarding passes till last  minute but as I was rushing I didn’t really think too much about it and just headed on out to the airport.  As we didn’t have any luggage to check in we headed straight on up to go through to the gate , it was then at this point that I suddenly realised that all my friends piece of paper looked very different to mine.  With my heart in my mouth and the realisation that I may not be getting on the plane I started to panic.  Heading on down to the Ryanair helpdesk I showed her the piece of paper that I had printed out where she was quick to point out that I had got the wrong piece of paper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I had printed off my itinerary and not the actual boarding cards.  Thinking that this would e fine for her just to print them on my behalf as I knew I had done my online check in and thought that this would be fine.  OHHHH NOOOO!!!!  Boarding cards must be printed off at least 4 hours before departure after you have completed your online check in and for her to print them off for me it would be £60.  I couldn’t believe my stupid mistake especially with the fact that I have worked in the travel industry for 13 years and book low cost flights for people on a daily basis…….very embarrassing.  I hoped that Ryanair would take pity on me and just print it off but no such luck and off I trotted to Benidorm £60 lighter and all for the sake of a little piece of paper.

So please, please, please, please take my advice if you are doing your own flights with your cruise then not only do you have to do your online check in the week before you travel but also you must print off and take your boarding card with Ryanair and not just your booking confirmation page with the reference number otherwise you could be paying for it at the airport – not a good start to your holiday.
I still had a fab time though and would travel with Ryanair again.  They get abit of a bad press but generally they were fine helpful and friendly with no delays and fantastic prices.
