Anyone who’s enjoyed the masterful landscapes and floral charms of Claude Monet will want to pay a visit to Vernon. This master of Impressionism derived inspiration from the stirring landscapes here, with Vernon offering swift access to the expansive Monet Foundation in nearby Giverny. This quaint little river port is tucked away in the Norman countryside, with additional attraction including the elegant Chateau de Bizy. Have a wander through the cheerful town centre, with its outdoor cafes giving you the chance to sit and admire the medieval architecture and bucolic country setting.
Vernon enjoys a pastoral setting tucked away on the banks of the Seine River, just a short ride away from the heart of Paris. This pretty little village features a blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, seen in notable buildings like the Collegiate Church of Our Lady. Look closely and you’ll notice its vibrant stained glass and 13th-century lantern tower.
The village looks like it comes straight from the pages of an old-fashioned storybook in the town centre, with its half-timbered houses surrounding the open-air squares. The House of Past Times is a lovely remnant from the 15th century in the town centre, and you can also note the Archive Tower nearby.
Flower fans and art history buffs won’t want to miss the trip to Giverny to see Monet’s illustrious gardens. These are beautifully maintained with a museum on hand to help you learn more about the Impressionist movement. One thing to note is that the paintings in Giverny are replicas – if you want to see real Monet works of art, they’re located in the Musee Alphonse-Georges Poulain right in Vernon!
Don’t miss a visit to the Cheateau de Bizy during your day in Vernon. It boasts elegantly landscaped grounds, a bevvy of fountains, and salons to rival those in Versailles.
