Considered London’s Port, Tilbury sits along the Thames just 25 miles away from London’s bustling city centre. It’s a snap to get into town from here, as well as major London airports and other tourist destinations across England. Within Tilbury you can learn more about its busy port setting, visit a historic fort, or relax in a quintessential English pub. One of the most scenic ways to get into London is via the Thames Clipper, which buses passengers directly down the river to the Tower Bridge. There you can enjoy all the sights of one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities!
Although most cruise passengers will travel straight to London, there are a few sights worth a look within Tilbury including its 17 th century fort and filming locations. However, London holds the star attractions here! Most museums are free to enter, so don’t pass up the chance to visit world-class galleries like the National Portrait Gallery, British Museum, Tate Britain and Tate Modern, and V&A. Have a look at Big Ben, tour the Houses of Parliament at Westminster, or see the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. Shop for souvenirs at Harrods, or have a whirl around the London Eye to enjoy the view!
The Tilbury cruise terminal is quite basic, housing a café, general store, and pay phones. As you exit the building, you’ll see a taxi rank which can take you into London. A much cheaper alternative is to take one of the shuttle buses which run back and forth from the terminal to St Pancras International Train Station in central London. Once you’ve reached the city, you can explore on the Tube metro system, by bus, over-ground train, or simply on foot! If you’re exploring Tilbury itself, a taxi is the best option to get into its town centre.
There’s secure parking at the Port of Tilbury. As you’re driving into the port, look for the signs that say ‘Car Parking with Luggage’ and follow these into the lot. It’s a good idea to reserve your parking ahead of time via your tour operator, cruise line representative, or travel agent. You’ll receive a Car Park Permit which can be displayed in the windscreen. Another option is to park in one of the multi- storey car parks in Tilbury town centre, and then take a taxi or shuttle bus into the port. If you decide to go this route, compare prices online first to find the best option!
Cruise passengers and Tilbury residents alike make the journey into London simply for its shopping outlets! You won’t want to miss a wander down colourful Carnaby Street, once the home of the Swinging Sixties brand of British cool. It still is home to little vintage stores where you can perfect your mod looks. Nearby is Oxford Street, filled with high street shops from Britain and beyond. Hyde Park has been the gathering place for Londoners for generations, hosting centuries of history ranging from duels to executions! Today it’s filled with tourists and residents relaxing in its manicured lawns, eating ice cream around the Serpentine, and listening to rants at the Speakers’ Corner. Anyone is invited to stand up and speak here, provided it’s not obscene! Kensington Palace sits next to the park, currently home to a range of royals. Tilbury’s centre offers its share of traditional pubs and international takeaways, but for top-notch cuisine you’ll want to head into London. Enjoy a unique dining experience at the Borough Market, positioned on the South Bank in the shadow of London Bridge. From freshly made cheese to artisan
breads and pies, you’ll find a wide world of food and drink stalls here.
