With its compact size and timbred medieval homes, Mainz is a charming town that appears as if it’s come straight off an old-fashioned chocolate box. This fairy-tale river port sits along the Rhine, notable for its 2,000 years of history and well-preserved landmarks such as the Cathedral of St Martin. The Gutenberg Museum is another highlight of Mainz, celebrating the town’s history as a centre for development of the printing press. Outside of the town’s intimate cafes and antique shops, you’ll find all the vineyards and dreamy old-world castles of the gorgeous Rheinsteig region to explore.
No visit to Mainz would be complete without a visit to its fantastically detailed Cathedral of St Martin, also known as ‘The Dom’. This sandstone building is a classic example of the Romanesque architecture style, with bronze doors, hidden statues of lions, and ancient cloisters. You’ll find this delightful attraction in the heart of Old Town’s historic marketplace.
Another fascinating church to put on your to-do list is St Stephen’s, the highlight of which is a series of stained-glass windows designed by none other than Marc Chagall. These were added to the building in the 1970s, blending artfully into the medieval building.
Learn more about the city’s history in the development of the printing press at the Gutenberg Museum, which showcases original printings of Bibles from the 15th century. The most famous of these is called, appropriately, the Gutenberg Bible!
Strolling around town is a particular pleasure with its leafy squares and hidden alleys. A highlight is the ‘Augustinerstrasse’, or ‘stroller’s mile’, which cuts through the centre of town and is lined with intriguing shops to peruse. You might also find some antique toys, leather goods or handmade jewellery to take home in the surrounding area – and don’t forget to pick up a bottle of locally produced wine.
