Düsseldorf is a traditional German city that is quickly transforming into a sleek and modern metropolis. The Old Town or Altstadt is a buzzing nightlife district, often referred to as the ‘longest bar in the world’ for its string of high-energy bars, pubs and beerhalls. You’ll find an eclectic dining scene with both trendy and traditional options, particularly in the regenerated harbourside MedienHafen neighbourhood. Although Düsseldorf is a major centre for finance and commerce, locals love to let their hair down, which you can see in festivals like the city’s annual Carnival.
This sleek city is home to uber-fashionable residents, so do as the locals do and go for a shopping excursion along the Konigsallee. You’ll find this major thoroughfare to be chock-a-block with designer boutiques and international brand names.
MedienHafen is a must-visit district for architecture fans, featuring contemporary and avant-garde buildings crafted by some of the world’s greats. This includes works by Frank Gehry and Claude Vasconi, as well as a bevy of trendy bars and eateries. Take the lift up to the top of Rhein Tower and enjoy the view!
It’s not all modern design in Dusseldorf! You can see historic architecture as well in areas like the Hofgarten, home to the Schloss Jagerhof Palace with its Rococo flourishes. Inside there’s the famous Goethe Museum, displaying this German intellectual’s most prized works. Schloss Benrath is another Rococo work of art – this pretty palace sits just half an hour’s tram ride outside of central Dusseldorf.
No time spent in Dusseldorf is complete without enjoying the local cuisine. Pea soup, caraway-flavoured cheese, and sausages are popular traditional staples along with the requisite glass of beer. The Hausbrauerei Zum Schlussel is a good spot to try the latter, with Schlussel beer served from wooden barrels.
