Enjoy the old-world charms of festive Bratislava, with its pedestrian-only Old Town and meandering cobbled alleyways. There’s an almost rural atmosphere to the Slovakian capital, thanks to its inspiring natural setting at the foothills of the Little Carpathian mountain range. Bratislava has been settled since Neolithic times, making it one of the oldest destinations in eastern Europe with the fascinating architecture to match! You’ll spy remnants of the Roman empire here next door to modern offices and medieval churches, along with an exciting nightlife and friendly dining scene to explore.
With Hungary to its south and Austria to its west, Bratislava is the only capital city in Europe that manages to border two different countries! Its Old Town is positioned on the Danube’s north bank, marked by its striking castle and pedestrianised shopping zone.
Wondering what else you’ll find in the Old Town? The main square is filled with history, whether it’s the tower of Old Town Hall which still features Napoleon’s cannonball, or the pink walls of Primate’s Palace.
Visit Bratislava in October to experience the White Night Festival, an enchanting showcase of contemporary art in unusual venues throughout the town. You might spy a sculptural installation in the palace gardens, or a dance performance in a bank!
Wine tasting is another prime pastime in Bratislava and its surroundings. During the autumn’s harvest, follow the Small Carpathian Wine Route to experience singing, dancing, and wine tasting in the various cellars along its 40km pathway.
Do you want to get a birds-eye view of the city? Take the lift up to the unique UFO observation deck. The UFO is shaped like a flying saucer, as its name suggests! It’s stuck at the top of the Most SNP bridge, with an onsite restaurant and views over the Danube and Old Town.
