Basel
Basel is one of my favourite ports to sail from. It is a lovely medieval old town to take a stroll around, with plenty to see such as the 12th century Gothic cathedral and the red-sandstone town hall.
Basel is a compact city that’s easy enough to explore on foot, but it also offers a reliable, user-friendly public transport system with trams and buses. To use these, buy a day ticket allowing you to hop on and off as you wish.
Wandering around Basel on foot is perhaps the best way to uncover the distinct old town’s character, from the observation platform overlooking the Black Forest at the Munsterplantz to the Rathaus’s painted frescoes. There are 140 fountains in the city, each with its own charm, but one of the most spirited is the Tinguely fountain featuring nine figures.
There are 40 museums in Basel, ensuring that there’s something to suit just about every interest! If you’re a fan of fine art, visit the Beyeler Foundation to see works from notable contemporary artists and masters like Warhol, Monet, Van Gogh, and Picasso.
Basel Zoo is the oldest of its kind in Switzerland, housing animals from all over the world in its elegantly landscaped enclosures. If you’re visiting in the winter, you’ll be able to see the penguins marching freely around the grounds.
Don’t miss the chance to try cheese fondue when in Basel, a deliciously gooey dish whether served with pieces of hearty bread or lightly steamed vegetables.
