There’s an exciting buzz to Bangkok, Thailand’s capital. Whether you’re enjoying a cocktail in a sleek rooftop bar or exploring floating markets, you’ll find something new around every corner in this old-meets-new port. Bustling Bangkok is home to the golden temples and the impressive opulence of the Grand Palace, with a high-octane nightlife and dazzling street food scene. Bangkok is nicknamed the ‘Venice of the East’ for its network of canals, making a tour boat a great way to explore its hidden landscapes. Enjoy the legendary hospitality of the Thai people in this friendly destination.
Large cruise ships don’t arrive in Bangkok city – you’ll dock at the Laem Chabang cruise terminal which is located in the Chonburi Province. Most cruise ships will arrange roundtrip shuttle bus service to whisk you from Laem Chabang directly to Bangkok city centre, but if not, you have a few options. You can book your own transfer with a private limo or taxi service, or take the public bus to Bangkok’s Eastern Bus Terminal. Within Bangkok, get around via tuk-tuk, taxi, or even express boat! You can also use the Skytrain, which offers a modern way to beat the traffic.
The Grand Palace is truly spectacular, built during the reign of King Rama I in 1782. Today’s king lives in Chitralada Palace instead, which means the lavish grounds of the Grand Palace is used as a centre for government. Some parts are open to the public on guided tours, and the grounds also include the famous Wat Phra Keo featuring the Emerald Buddha. Bangkok’s additional temples worth visiting include the Wat Po (reclining Buddha), and Wat Traimit (Golden Buddha). Don’t leave Thailand without visiting a traditional floating market - Damnoen Saduak is a bit out of the way, but it’s worth it to see the boats laden with fresh fruit and veg.
There’s nothing like tasting Thai cuisine in its country of origin. Whether you’re partial to a satay or a curry, you’ll be in foodie heaven! Thai food relies on typical flavours like lemongrass, basil, garlic, ginger, mint, and kaffir lime, which you can taste in coconut-based curries, Pad Thai stir-fried noodle dishes topped with fish sauce and chilli peppers, and peanut dipping sauces for spring rolls. Its lush environment allows a staggering range of tropical fruit and luscious vegetables to flourish, so don’t skimp on papaya salads or banana ice cream. And with a waterfront location, seafood is also impeccably fresh and flavourful.
Bangkok
Bangkok is a mix of all the best and worst of Asia, amazing markets, shopping and food are all here and some of the best temples you could see outside Cambodia.
Bangkok
Thailand’s capital Bangkok is a mixture of tradition, culture and vibrant street life. This is somewhere you must visit.
See the more traditional Thai way of life by visiting one of the fishing villages located outside of the city. The best immersion experiences allow you to sail down the coast in a long-tailed fishing boat, spend time in a fishing house on stilts, and enjoy freshly caught seafood prepared in an authentic country style.
Bangkok boasts a dizzying array of markets to choose from. One of the best is the Chatuchak Weekend Market, featuring over 15,000 vendors! With so many different stalls, it’s impossible to walk away empty handed. Whether you’re on the hunt for something made from silk or a Buddha figurine, you’ll have plenty to choose from. Haggling is expected, which is why many items don’t have a clearly marked price.
Don’t have time to take a scuba diving trip? A visit to the SEA LIFE Aquarium in Bangkok is the next-best thing, with hundreds of species on display. You’ll see loads of wildlife native to the Indian Ocean, along with Giant Spider Crabs, Stingray Sharks, and African Penguins!
Leave the hustle and bustle behind without actually leaving the city when you relax in Lumphini Park. Its artificial lake, well-tended lawns and shaded paths provide an oasis from the daily grind.
