This week Royal Caribbean announced the Anthem of the Seas will be sailing out of Southampton in 2020 and will go on sale from the 20th November 2018. I think this is great news having one of their Quantum class ships sailing from the UK.
Think the biggest question is how will Southampton a port that is already congested cope with another ship. She will join other large ships such as the Iona, P&O’s newest ship that will be doing 7 night Fjords cruises from May 2020, Celebrity Apex, Queen Mary 2 and lots more. The Iona carries 5200 passengers, Celebrity Apex holds 2900 passengers, don’t forget the Anthem carries 4180 passengers plus all the other P&O ships, not forgetting the 3 Cunard ships which adds up to just over 6800 passengers and this isn’t taking into account Fred Olsen or Princess cruises. Of course they are not all going to sail at the same time but it just gives you an idea of how many passengers throughout a busy summer season will sail from Southampton.
It’s great news for Southampton bringing in more job opportunities but it will really bring in a lot more traffic in the area. More and more people will now want to stay a night in Southampton to avoid delays getting onto ships. Remember ships will not wait for passengers, just like planes or trains!! So if your considering a cruise out of Southampton in 2020 then also consider booking a hotel before you sail. A great excuse to start your holiday off a day early.
