It takes a day to get to Norway from Southampton. A day at sea is a perfect opportunity for you to explore your new home and familiarize one’s self with what is available. You can do as much as you want especially on a ship such as Indy os as little as you want at the pool. Your first formal night is usually on this sea day and this is where you have the chance to dress up and meet the captain and crew at the Captains cocktail party.
At the heart of Fjord country lies picturesque Bergen. It’s rugged glacial scenery, green slopes and charming medieval architecture are pure inspiration. A city among seven mountains, this port traces its roots back to 1070 when it was built on the site of an old market.
Shortly thereafter, Bergen established itself as a Hanseatic center for trade, with a lucrative fishing monopoly that lasted until 1789. Even today after all these years the local Norwegians continue trading their much sought -after dried cod, an industry that remains strong.
Our second port of call is considered the most beautiful in Norway, the Geiranger fjord. With thundering waterfalls, glistening glaciers, and lofty snow-capped mountains reflected in mirror-still-lakes. This is a World Heritage Site and if that is picture perfect from every angle.
The small village of Geiranger is equally charming but the best view is up the road at Flydal Gorge, where you can see the fjord and all the cruise ships in the bay.
The fjord itself stretches inland some 10 miles, fed by gushing waterfalls. The most famous known as the seven sisters. It was here where our captain did a 360 turn so that we could all get the best view.
The weather was a little damp but very humid and hot. So pack layers and do not forget your umbrellas.
In my next blog, I will continue with our Norwegian magical adventure. But in the meantime, if you have any questions or are considering this destination for your next cruise please feel free to ask questions and I will endeavor to answer them or even book your next cruise.
The following youtube clip is from a fellow passenger who has a passion for cruising – enjoy his debut vlog.
