QE2 Brought back to life…..

What a great idea! The Queen Elizabeth 2 opens today as a floating hotel in Dubai! Today is the soft opening as features will be shown and open to the public in stages, with the Grand Opening due in October this year.

The ship which is docked at Mina Rashid, has been converted into a 13 deck hotel with rooms ranging from standard size of 17sq m to two Royal Suites of 76sq m. She will have 13 restaurants and bars, a ballroom, interactive museum and meeting rooms, once all finished. The ship will also feature shops run by Dubai duty free.

Queen Elizabeth 2 was built back in 1969 for Cunard, during a 39-year career for Cunard, she completed 1,400 more voyages, including 25 circumnavigations. She hosted 2.5 million passengers and sailed six million nautical miles. Then in 2008 she was bought by PCFC Hotels, owned by the Dubai government and they were planning on doing the transformation straight away but with problems in the economy it was put on hold for over 4 years,  but last year engineers where appointed to begin the refit.

I think this is fantastic idea, why let such a iconic ship like this go to waste. I’m sure this will be a very popular hotel and i would love to stay there myself some day. I also think it’s a lovely idea for any passengers who had previously sailed on the QE2 to go back and take a look at her now as a hotel. I’ve also heard that prices are going to be very reasonable too for the next few months before the main launch in October!
