Silversea to me has to be one of my favourite cruise lines when it comes to the ultra-luxury market. 6* Cruising at its finest and I have been so lucky to have experienced two of the ships in the Silversea Fleet.
The first was the Silver Cloud, the flagship in the fleet for Silversea at the time, and I had been a little weary as although I like the smaller ships, I don’t like them too small – Silver Cloud at the time was around 14,000 gross tons and about 200 people – this was before she underwent the transformation to one of the expedition ships in the fleet. She was completely overhauled and made into an Ice Class ship to cover the Polar regions but all that aside she was simply stunning.
The second was the newer Silver Whisper which is 28,000 gross tons so still classed as a smaller ship, but holding just 382 passengers, to give you an idea to compare with the Pacific Princess with Princess is slightly larger than this and her passenger capacity is around the 650 mark so there really is so much extra space on board per guest.
This comes with some very exciting news and Silversea have just announced that they are adding 3 new ships to the fleet, this does come with some sad news that one ship will be leaving the fleet however.
First will be the Silver Origin that will join the fleet in March 2020. She will be the new Expedition ship in the fleet cruising the Galapagos Islands. She will retain the 100-guest captivity that we have currently on the Silver Galapagos, and cruise the same routes but this does mean that Silversea will say goodbye to the Silver Galapagos. It is due as although Silversea spends a lot of money keeping their ships looking the best, Silver Galapagos rather an old girl dating back to 1990.
Silversea has also announced that they will be building two new Evolution Class ships which will be delivered in 2022 but no more details on this.
Some may say that Silversea is moving fast and to be honest I would agree, Although Regent, Seabourn, and even Crystal are having new ships, 2 seems to be the most, but Silversea have already had the Silver Muse, the Silver Moon is due in 2020, then with the 2 new ships from 2022 it takes then up to 12 ships but the market I think is expanding quick enough to justify the new ships.
Having been on Seabourn, Crystal, Regent etc – each line really does have there own look, Seabourn is very modern – reminds you a bit of a superyacht from the look of her from the outside in, Crystal is a little bit more older fashioned but you can let them off as the ships are of the older design but once you step on board they are very bright and airy ships – lots of stand out colours but not over the top. Regent is much more modern but retaining the classiness.
The best way I can describe Silversea – well, stepping on board is like coming home. There are lots of lounges dotted around with family and friends just sitting down talking and the warmest of atmospheres. The ships are beautifully finished, but they are not over the top. Some people like to do the Luxury ships to have all those extra bits but with Silversea its Luxury without them.
Have you been on Silversea? Or if not one of the other Luxury Lines – what do you think?
