There has been more new ship news announced this week… and it’s of P&O’s second new ship being on order which should launch in 2022! This follows the previous announcement for it’s sister ship which will launch in 2020. But the news that seems to have shocked and caused upset among many loyal P&O guests is the size of the ship which is set to hold a capacity of 5200 passengers!
P&O bosses have boasted that these ships will be more environmentally friendly and innovative in design, dining and entertainment options but I think many of P&O’s customers can’t see beyond the scale of the increase in size in comparison to current P&O ships! This is due to the current largest in their fleet being the Britannia which holds 3647 guests. Even this ship has been slammed by some guests as being too big and losing the intimate feel they love a ship to have.
Take a look at our news story for more details and to give your opinion:
This news follows the sale of the much-loved P&O Adonia last year to Azamara, which held 777 passengers and was a favourite of many passengers looking for a more intimate ship that can get into smaller ports. Customers on our forum are worried that once the other, mid-sized ships such as the Oriana and Aurora are too old to sail, they will not be replaced by similar sized ships and passengers will have no choice but to sail on these mega-ships.
Other cruise lines have launched mega-ships already with the MSC Meraviglia launching this year holding up to 5714 passengers and Symphony of the seas to hold up to 6870 guests when it launches this year. This is just to name a few!
Are mega ships the way forward or will there still be space for smaller cruise lines? There is definitely the demand for them and my personal preference is a medium sized ship.
Let me know what you think!
