Top Six Bread Rolls at Dinner

I don’t know about you but one of my biggest dieting downfalls is eating too much bread with a starter/meal.

Warm rolls with butter, a loaf of rye bread at the table, bread sticks with the soup, I know I shouldn’t but it I love it.

One thing I have noticed is when you’re on a cruise there is such a wide choice of bread/rolls you just can’t help yourself.

Little did you know that on most cruise liners fresh bread is baked in house and done at least three times a day, the bread for the bread baskets and dinner rolls are all made by hand. You have white slice, brown slice, white roll, brown roll, focaccia, granary, tera rolls with macadamia nut butter, Hawaiian sweet bread, butter, margarine, the selection is endless!!!!

So this week I thought I would do the best six breads you can find on a cruise……

Here are my choices from sixth to first (feel free to disagree in the comments below):

In 6th place : White bread rolls – Far too plain to make the top of the list

In 5th place : Brown bread rolls

In 4th place : Granary bread – Mmmmm, getting tasty now!

In 3rd place : Focaccia – Is there anyone who doesn’t like this Italian favourite (it’s the main reason I book MSC)

In 2nd place : Hawaiian Sweet Bread

In joint 1st place : It had to be butter and macadamia nut butter, sorry you just cannot eat warm bread without a bit of butter to melt in your mouth (that’s right – I dont care what bread they serve as long as I get my macadamia nut butter!)

Just to throw a spanner in the works though……….?

When should you eat your bread roll?

Before you’re starter?

With the soup?

Should the waiter bring out more with the soup if you eat it all before your starter ?

Who knew bread could me such a mine field!

Mmmm well I say they should ditch the tasty bread rolls because it is not helping my waistline. (No, no, I’m sorry bread I take it back!!!!!)

So do you have a favourite roll you always reach for at dinner? When do you munch down on it? Before your starter or with the soup?

What is the etiquette for bread??!!!???

  1. Focaccia is my favourite, they have it on P & O and I found it on NCL recently too, can’t get enough. Mostly I find that the butter is usually too hard to spread!!!

  2. I am Coeliac..so bread is ALWAYS a problem.
Often have plain g/f (sorry….gluten free) toasted on one side only.
Higher sugar content makes it very slow for toasting…especially if its been frozen. Oh for a halfway decent gluten free focaccia…(and yes they do exist…)

  3. I am not a bread/roll eater but on Fred Olsen I cannot resist all the variety of bread rolls offered. Every one is delicious, none is better than another. They have so many to choose from and refill the baskets if needed.

  4. Bread should be torn a little piece at a time and the butter applied. Never should it be cut in half and buttered!!! Learned that at an etiquette class!! Just saying lol
