Whilst I was on the Crown Princess in April/May we decided it would be nice to sample the Sanctuary for half a day, as we had often thought about trying the Retreat (P&O’s equivalent) but had never bothered. On Princess you can either purchase the whole day or half an day at $20 pp and then can pick from either 8am to 12.30pm, or 1pm to 5.30pm. We chose to do the afternoon when we were docked in Gibraltar as we had been to Gibraltar many times and would only be off a couple of hours in the morning to stretch our legs.
So what is the Sanctuary – Princess cruises describe it as an Unique oasis of tranquility, well this it certainly was as there was only us and another couple in the Sanctuary all afternoon. The Sanctuary is an adults only area on the ship (normally located near the spa), and in a quieter area away from the noise of the main pool and big screen. There is padded, cushioned sun loungers which then get full covered in white fluffy towels and are extremely comfortable to lie on and relax. The Sanctuary has a large canopy for those who do not like to sit out in the sun all day long.
Whilst in the Sanctuary you are looked after by the Serenity Stewards who look after you by refilling your glasses, bringing round afternoon tea – when the Sanctuary is busy they bring round the trolley so you can choose, but as we had picked a quiet day a plate with a selection was brought to each of us. You can also borrow an MP3 player to listen to relaxing music if you wish. There was also two private cabanas where you could have a spa treatment (obviously at an additional cost). You can also order food and drinks for a small service charge.
Whilst we were in there we were only asked twice if we wanted drinks – when we first arrived (and then it was topped up without us noticing) and when afternoon tea came out – what tea did we want to have.
Overall it was a very relaxing afternoon and my partner who was a bit skeptical about spending the money enjoyed himself and said he had managed to read his book in peace and enjoy sitting outside (under the canopy as he is not one for being in the sun too long). The only think is we must have been right by the horn as we jumped out of our chairs when the Captain sounded the horn as we were departing Gibraltar. We would definitely use the Sanctuary again.
Have you used the Sanctuary on board and what was your thoughts?
Have a good couple of weeks
