Predicting the cost of fuel…..P&O make me angry again!

P&O make me really angry, they have just launched their 2011 programme and advised customers that the early booking offers are in place until 30 June 2010.

Now they go and announce a fuel supplement for all sailings from 01 November 2010. At £2.50/day this puts the price up by £35pp on a typical 14 night cruise. How the cruise lines get away with charging a fuel supplement I don’t know – this is a charge to allow for the increase in the global price of fuel.

Predicting the price of fuel is clearly not rocket science.  It has consistently increased in price over the last few years and will continue to go up over the next year. Surely P&O realised that they need fuel to run their ships and could have calculated this cost into the brochure price.

But hey, I’m not the one doing the pricing, just the person on the end of the phone trying to explain it to the customer.

This new charge applies to all bookings made from 10th May onwards, so if you want to avoid the charge book now.

  1. You fail to mention if this fuel rise is per person or per booking. If per person it will me £70 added to our next booking?

  2. We (2) have 3 cruises booked with P&O 14 nights this July (paid in full) 18 nights in November an d 21 nights next April 2011 and have paid deposits oln the last two.

Will we be charged any extra fof fuel?

    Gordon R Williams

  3. yes most cruise lines will do this on the last invoice

  4. does it affect the ventura cruise to the caribbean in nov 10′ i booked that last year dont have to pay balnce though till aug 10

  5. For food taster and Gordon Rhys it is stated above that the charges do not start until May 10th so your earlier bookings are free from this charge ~ I also phoned P&O and had it confirmed for my Dec 2010 cruise that there would be no fuel suppliment added

  6. Thanks Shelledpea for answering the questions for me. Unfortunately I’ve been away this weekend and unable to log on. Just to let you know Foodtaster – it is a per person charge.
