Well here I am, just back from five nights on Fred Olsen’s Balmoral, all refreshed and raring to go. What a wonderful time we had, if you haven’t cruised to the Fjords then I would highly recommend it. They are quite simply breathtaking!
One of the highlights of our trip was the Rib Adventure in Eidfjord on Sunday morning. You may recall that I was a little bit nervous about it but honestly, it was absolutely fantastic. Even the grey skies and rain didn’t spoil our enjoyment. It was just the best fun ever and if you are going to the Fjords any time soon, book it!!
We set off at 8.15am – bit early I know but they do have later slots available. We were kitted out in our big padded suits, life vest and goggles, given a safety briefing by our lovely driver then we boarded the rib and we were off. We spent an hour bombing around the fjord with the driver – is that the right term?, pointing out places of interest and telling us stories of the fjords along the way. In years gone by there were no roads in and out so the only way that local children could get to their school high up on a mountain was to climb up a very steep rock face! You can still see little rope bridges that they used in places to help them up and back down again. Apparently they went to school on a Monday and only returned home for the weekends. It made me giddy just thinking about it as I looked up.
We then went on and took in a couple of beautiful waterfalls before slowing down close to the edge where the driver called to his herd of goats who came running down the steep slopes to be fed.
After a final big loop at top speed we returned safely to our ship, feeling thoroughly exhilarated after this wonderful experience, one that I would repeat in a heartbeat. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity, I promise you that you will love it! Just make sure that you book it well in advance as this excursion was sold out over a month before the cruise.
Another one for the memory bank, and one that I will treasure for sure.

For now, happy cruising folks and next time I will tell you more about our little adventure on Freds!
