A river ship isn’t just a river ship you know. Well not if it’s a Viking river cruise ship it isn’t, and it is this that sets Viking apart from all the other river cruise lines. Their fleet is now over 60 ships, sailing rivers all over the world, and each ship is designed especially with the river it is going to be sailing on in mind. Let me tell you about them…………
Viking Longships – designed and built to sail the rivers of Europe, their style is contemporary Scandinavian, classy and comfortable. With panoramic windows in all the public areas the ships are full of natural light and are bright and airy inside, in the dining room, the lounge, the library or reception areas. Weather permitting you can also enjoy the Sun Deck and the Aquavit Terrace towards the front of the ship. These ships take 190 guests and have river view cabins, French Balcony cabins and even cabins with a private balcony.
Douro Ships – Viking Hemming, Viking Torgil and Viking Osfrid will be your home as you sail along the Duro, affectionately known as the ‘River of Gold’. Similar to the Viking Longships but much smaller, accommodating just 106 guests. They offer all the same features as their larger cousins and they also feature a small pool on the Sun Deck, a must for Portugal’s sunnier climes.
Elbe Ships – at just three years old, Viking Beyla and Viking Astrild were built especially to navigate the shallow River Elbe. They are very elegant ships and have all the features of the larger ships but only accommodate 98 guests.
Russia Ships – are the largest of the Viking fleet and are spacious inside and out. Again these ships feature panoramic windows and the classic Scandinavian style.
Nile Ship – the newest and most elegant ship in Viking’s fleet is the Viking Ra which was completely refurbished in 2017. She combines Viking’s signature Scandinavian style combined with Eastern influences such as traditional Arabic geometric patterns. She carries just 52 passengers in her 26 spacious suites many of which feature a private balcony. Viking Ra boasts an outdoor pool and two jacuzzi’s on her Sun Deck as well as a spa.
I hope that gives you a better insight into the variations of river cruise ships.
For now, happy cruising!
