Big Ship with Little Ship Feel about it…………
Back to my trip to Southampton back in September when I visited ms Konigsdam for the day, and a little bit more about the ship itself which I haven’t really covered yet.
As I mentioned before, it had been 10 years since I was last on a Holland America ship, so would Konigsdam be as good as I remember Eurodam to be.
The answer, quite simply, is yes.
Now when I say big ship, Konigsdam is sort of fair to middling at 99.000 tonnes and being launched in 2016 she is currently Holland America’s newest ship.
As I remember the Eurodam having a very classy feel on board,Konigsdam is much the same. Beautiful decor throughout the ship, some very tasteful artworks and sculptures throughout the ship too. A very sumptuous feel throughout. That said, the cabins are quite plain yet functional. One feature that surprised us all was the four berth Family Ocean View, a quite compact cabin, but it has two bathrooms, very handy with four people in the cabin! No loo in there but an extra shower and basin.
Although this does fall into the ‘larger ship’ category, and it is quite a stunning ship to walk around it did not feel so impersonal as the bigger ships can, in fact one of my colleagues came out with an excellent analogy which I think fits perfectly, Konigsdam feels like a 5* Fred Olsen ship. this of course is brilliant for me as I am a big fan of Freds. Despite the beautiful decor, she feels comfortable and welcoming and the staff we met on board are equally welcoming too, just as they are on Freds. These staff are obviously very happy in their work, all smiles and happy to have a chat while they worked. As I have already said, lunch was delicious and efficiently served too.
All in all I would highly recommend Konigsdam to you if you have never sailed with Holland America. Sadly, they don’t sail from the UK often, the day we visited was actually a port of call on a repositioning cruise from Amsterdam to the Med.
